hi.. i know i should know this.. but
sienna is ALWAYS making the silent reflux loud swallowing noise.. when she is awake.. and mostly when she is sleeping.. and she loses her breath it seems like..and does that really fast breathing as if she cant catch it.is this normal reflux behavior? she does it very often while sleeping. i dont remember this with shane because he was a spitting it out refluxer. … her’s doesnt seem to come out a lot.. so she is really noisy.does this indicate meds are necessary? still no real bouts of crying…. just the normal fussyness at times.. no screaming.January 15, 2009 at 2:07 pm #60339AnonymousInactiveMy baby does this – count how long she doesn’t breathe for. If it is more than 20 seconds it is very important that you discuss this with your doctor. My baby kept “holding her breath” I said when she was refluxing and they kept saying it was not a problem unless she turned blue or it was more than 20 seconds. Well, sure enough, she turned blue. So she is now on an apnea monitor. Given these complications, I would definitely pursue medication.
KarenJanuary 15, 2009 at 2:23 pm #60340AnonymousInactiveLauren,
I know you really want to avoid meds if at all possible and I totally relate. Have you tried the mylanta yet for the constipation?? If you have did she still have the breathing episodes?? If they went away after the mylanta and returned after a bit, then I might think about trying Zantac or Axid to see if it makes things better. We tend to forget that silent reflux is actually worse than regular reflux b/c they get the burn 2x vs just once when they let it out…
January 15, 2009 at 3:07 pm #60344AnonymousInactivethanks..
i will get the mylanta 2day. do i give it before or after feeding? is one ml. 1/2 a teaspoon? i guess i would have to ask pharmacist for a syringe huh?ugh. i am really scared about the breathing stuff. its like she cant catch it… or it just sounds really fast. i asked ped yesterday and all she asked me is if she turns blue. no…. but if that happens i feel like its too late! 🙁oh and i just read some1 elses post about thickening.. sienna is on rtf which is thick.. should i thicken it more? would that help her situation?shanesmom2009-01-15 15:09:44
January 15, 2009 at 3:17 pm #60348AnonymousInactiveI would give 1/2 to 1 ml before feeds and in between if you think it helps. I think you can give up to 5ml/day. But if you see loose stools that is when you need to back off.
January 15, 2009 at 3:18 pm #60349AnonymousInactiveOh just saw your edit, I would not thicken as the cereal is so hard for them to digest it might cause her even more discomfort.
January 15, 2009 at 3:22 pm #60350AnonymousInactiveoh i meant w/simply thick or thick it
January 15, 2009 at 8:23 pm #60354AnonymousInactiveOwen was breathing 80 times per minute and I know this sounds impossible, but I didn’t notice it and my sister is a ped nurse and made me take him to the ER immediately b/c she was afraid he was going to have resp failure.
That is when they told me that b/c of acid build up they breathe really fast. I can’t remember the reasoning that they gave me. Anyway, that’s when we started Prevacid. I don’t remember any episodes of holding his breath.January 15, 2009 at 9:36 pm #60357hellbenntKeymasterjonah had apena from holding his breath- it was explained to me that the lungs are trying to protect themselves from the acid-it’s the body’s response- so they hold their breaths and turn blue=apnea
as for the thickening, I would think it would make refluxing all that much more difficult bcse it’s silent- so I think of that thick stuff going down and then back up again-I suppose thickening is meant to ‘weigh’ everything down, but in my imagination I just see a thick sludge coming back up-don’t know if this is true?I would ask pharmacist for skinny 1ml syringe for the mylanta- there are 5mls in a teaspoon, so you can give up to 5mls/1 teaspoon a day…January 17, 2009 at 10:12 am #60392AnonymousInactiveLauren, I just hopped on here to see how you and your baby are doing. I’m so sorry to hear that your dealing with reflux again. I am due in April and am kind of expecting this one to have reflux, but am way to hopeful that it won’t. I hope for you guys that things don’t get any worse and you won’t have to do meds. I have heard probiotics can help especially if it’s not that bad and I have heard a lot of good things about giving enzymes. I think if this one has reflux I am going to see an herbalist. Of course, if that doesn’t work, I will be back on zegerid. Money down the drain.
