Well I think it’s sadly our turn for a dreaded ear infection – would be
Marisa’s first. Last few days she’s been REALLY cranky and fussy and
restless – we chalked it up to teething (still none present though) and
then started to suspect foods (we recently started peas) but yesterday
started to question ears and she was pulling on her right ear and had a
low grade fever. She also was eating her bottle pretty well, although
worse at night, but not thrilled with solids. And she was flipping out when laid flat.Should have taken her to Ped yesterday but she seemed a bit better in
the afternoon so we cancelled appointment. Then she had a really
rough evening and harder night – she was crying in her sleep from 9-11
off and on and up and screaming from 12:15-2:00 or so with a 101.5
fever. We gave her Tylenol at 12:30 or so and again at 5:30 (Motrin
seems to make her vomit) and she sucked down 3 ounces. She slept
peacefully from 2:15 or so until 5:30 and then felt ice cold and had no
fever although was still pulling at hear so gave more Tylenol. She fell
back asleep at about 6 and is still sleeping now at 7:15, although she
cried once a few minutes ago.Doctor’s office opens at 8:30 so I guess i’ll wake her at 7:45 and feed
her and change her and head up there. My Ped isn’t in today but I like
everyone else there except for one horrid doctor.Given her very sensitive tummy, if it is an ear infection are there
certain antibiotics that she might deal better with? Anything I should
avoid? She is already on probiotics…knb18 2006-3-23 7:16:11 March 23, 2006 at 8:19 am #4456AnonymousInactivethey’ll most likely give amoxicillan (sp?) but TELL them she is on probiotics…amox never bothered my first and he has a sensitive tummy as well. Other than that, there’s augmentin which not only is more bothersome to the tummy, also tastes like crap. (amox is the pink bubble gum stuff kids love)
March 23, 2006 at 8:22 am #4457AnonymousInactiveHope she feels better with the antibiotics Karen. Did she have a cold recently, or do you think it’s just one of the side effects of the reflux?
March 23, 2006 at 8:25 am #4459AnonymousInactiveShe and I both had colds recently so think (and hope) it’s just that.
Her reflux hasn’t seemed to bad lately so I’d hate for that to be
flaring up.Have an appointment at 10:15 so will post after that. Thanks also for the antibiotic tips, Jill.
March 23, 2006 at 9:28 am #4465AnonymousInactiveKaren, I’m actually allergic to amoxacillin, but my daughter never had a problem with it in terms of allergy- BUT, it did always cause the nastiest diarrhea. So the last time I believe they gave us cefzil. Here you can get the amoxacillin as either bubble gum or banana- Sarah always hated bubble gum so we used to go for the banana (we found it easier to slip into her milk if she refused a dose).
March 23, 2006 at 9:36 am #4466AnonymousInactiveThanks Lori. With our continuing constipation issues, maybe diarrhea
wouldn’t be so bad?! But I will definitely ask about the Cefzil. She’s
pretty good with medicine as long as it’s not Zantac (that was the
WORST) so I’m not too concerned about that – but good to know.Leaving here in about 5-10 minutes – will post when we get back.
March 23, 2006 at 9:40 am #4468AnonymousInactiveKaren, I think everyone’s system is different. I took cefzil during my pregnancy, and I got a serious colitis infection from it (and I don’t have colitis in general). Sarah was never bothered by it.s&h’s mum2006-3-23 9:42:25
March 23, 2006 at 10:22 am #4476AnonymousInactiveWe just finished amoxicillan and he was a little fussy from stomach pain but that is about it! She really should be fine with the probiotics at the same time-it should cancel out the stomach issues for the most part. Did she end up having an ear infection?
March 23, 2006 at 11:31 am #4482AnonymousInactiveHey guys – thanks again for all the info. Doc says ears are clean –
same with throat and chest – so that’s good. He thinks just bad virus
and said to give Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin at night if I
want (which she seems to be OK with – bothers her during day for some
reason). If she still has a fever or is very cranky this weekend we
have to bring her back. She fell asleep in stroller on way home but
unfortunately woke up as soon as we got home (dog down hall was
barking) – she’s trying now to fall back asleep in her crib since I’m
sure she needs the rest.

The neighbors must have thought she had the crankiest baby in the world!!
March 23, 2006 at 12:21 pm #4489AnonymousInactiveThat’s funny Jill! Actually, M usually loves dogs (you should see her
laugh at and try to chase/army crawl after my SIL’s dog) but not when
she is sick and they wake her up… -
