OK, so since Ezra has been on 30 mg of prevacid, his reflux has gotten much better. NO more red faces and murderous screams. However, it doesn’t stop the actual reflux as you all know, it just changes the ph level. So the first problem I’m having is that he ONLY wants to nurse side lieing in bed how weird for a reflux baby right? So we get away with it for naps, but he goes to sleep around 9pm and only wants to wake about 12 hrs later, but that is with nursing off and on all night. Because our days are so intense and stressful, getting a decent nights sleep is the only thing keeping me sane. But after taking him to an ENT, they confirmed that all of his wheezing, snoring, congestion, etc is from lieing flat all night and nursing (and not getting burped on top of it) I’ve tried bringing his foam wedge into the bed and nursing on that, but it’s impossible. I also don’t think his wedge is at a high enough angle for him, considering the carseat in the pack n play next to the bed and just try to transfer him after a feed? What are other people’s sleep arrangements with their breastfed babies? Should I look into raising our whole bed or is that too difficult? I’m open to all creative ideas that will help his reflux but keep us getting some sleep.
The next question is about meds. We switched him 3 days ago to prilosec. We are using the products, as were with the prevacid. The GI spec said we shouldn’t expect much of a difference, but I wanted to give it a try anyway. Although he was on 30 mg for prevacid, she put him on only 20 mg of prilosec because she said mg for mg they are not the same? After reading about it and seeing conflicting info, I decided to go with 30 mg anyway. We seem to be experiencing a bit of a relapse and I’m wondering if that’s normal when switching PPI’s or a warning that the prilosec is not for us? Also, the Prevacid is EXTREMELY constipating and requires me to keep him on a steady stream of mirilax so gp suggested Zegerid or wait, Zantac?…talk to me about zegerid?? Worth going on? people seen success? what’s the down side?
And last question, what about Reglan? Why is it not offered very much? Ezra’s reflux is bad enough where I want to consider it, but need info and success stories first. Aren’t there a lot of side effects? Thanks everyone, I appreciate your input!

do a search here, upper right-hand corner of this page is search buttonthen search keyword reglanthen go BACK 1 yr and OLDERthere’s also links from ‘groupie intro’YOU decide! I can’t tell you what to do…as for sleeping…you gotta do what works for everyone…is all the wheezing, snoring, congestion detrimental? will it harm him?how old is he now?prilosec isn’t as strong as prevacid, more of a dose is needed than prevacid I believe?look at dosing chart?it’s inPrevacid 101:
last page of the post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1as for zegerid:zegerid has the drug prilosec in it and it has buffers, so that it can be given w/ food. Otherwise, you must give a PPI on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. Examples of situations where you have to follow the ’30 minute rule:’ if you use prevacid solutabs or, if you use either prevacid or prilosec capsules (you would open them up and give the beads inside the capsule- you would give on an empty stomach and administer the beads w/ 1/2 tsp of applesauce & then you would follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later).
why should you care about zegerid? because you can give the medicine at any time, even with food, and you don’t have to worry about timing it around an empty stomach.
are there other options?
yes, you can buy over the counter capsules and administer the beads inside the capsule.
any other options?
you can try and TELL the pharmacist EXACTLY how to compound (make into a liquid) your prevacid or prilosec. However, for whatever reasons, it can be difficult to get a high enough dose prescribed and, for whatever reasons, pharmacist insist they’re doing it correctly their way and they don’t take kindly to compounding the way you or your doctor tells them to.
