Alex had her tubes put in today. When the ENT came out to get us in the waiting room when she was done, he made a comment about the impressive amount of pus in her left ear. No wonder she’s been so cranky – if the ENT thinks that the infection is impressive, it must be pretty bad!
The whole experience wasn’t bad at all. She had a little trouble coming out of the anesthesia. Before she went in the anesthesiologist talked to us and he actually said that redheads typically are more wild as they come out of it. (No explanation beyond that – it’s an interesting idea, if it’s really true) She was a mess for the first couple of hours, but then she took a three hour nap (which never happens!) and woke up like a new child. She was happier this evening than we’ve seen her in the last two or three months!
Dealing with my cranky, ear infection prone, sleep deprived child for the last two months has given me a whole new appreciation for those of you with severe reflux babies and older siblings. Kaelyn was an absolute nightmare for her whole first year, but at least we were only dealing with her. Trying to take care of Alex for the last few months and keep Kaelyn happy has been a real challenge. I often found myself imagining what it would have been like if Alex had been such a high maintenance baby all along. Just thinking about it sends chills up my spine. So kudos to all of you who have been dealing with that all along!

As soon as you said that though I vaguely recall hearing that somewhere before and thinking it was silly. Sarah sure was a mess when she came out of it though!!!! I hope that tubes were the answer for you and you see some real improvements soon. Just a few days after her surgery, Sarah started LAUGHING like crazy. Every little thing made her giggle…before she would only laugh if you physically tickled her or swung her around. It was a small change…but a pretty cool one! Hope you find the same happiness!

Bryce had an especially hard time coming out of anesthesia with his ear tube surgery too for some reason. I remember it took forever for me to calm him down, but once he did and took a nap he was totally fine.
Anyway, so glad she’s feeling better!

June 27, 2007 at 12:37 pm #38102AnonymousInactiveHey, that is great!!! I’m so glad she came through the surgery ok. I hope the tubes start to help immediately
I’ve gotten the red head comments already with Caden. When he was so fussy as a newborn, people would always say, “Oh, it’s that red hair!” or something similar to that.
I’m already tired of it…but I guess I’d better prepare myself for more to come since it doesn’t seem that his hair color is going to change any time soon – not that I want it to. I think it’s beautiful! I just think it will probably change since all of our other kids’ hair has darkened up over time (as has mine – I was blond as a little girl and very dark brown headed now).
Have a great day!
