Ok, day 14 of banana and day 6 of butternut squash and Ian’s temperment is great just lots of reflux and trouble on bottles.
Yesterday morning, we saw a dried, tiny brownish spot near where his head lies. We still don’t know what that is and are a little concerned it’s blood from another ulcer (despite 30mg of prevacid again a day). DH thinks it’s nasal mucous because temperment, sleeping is fine. I’m going to see dr. this week jic. Now today Ian had his first poo in 3 days again (now stretched out from 2x a day and watery poos have gone mushy after solids) but something strange-it was very hard and small. Ian has never been constipated in a traditional way before. And, it had what looked like-a little bit of blood. We’re not sure if it’s orange from the squash or just a little blood from irritation of a rough bowel movement? He’s only been eating 2 tsp of squash a day…. blood appeared to be on the surface and not really mixed in…
Can anyone hear chime in on squash poos? Or babies with constipation like that (maybe Karen?) have a little blood from anal tear? Although it doesn’t appear so on his bum. Bum doesn’t even look that red. Anyone seen their child have a bad reaction like blood to a pretty benign veg like squash? He’s not really showing any irritation from it except reflux(which he was showing prior to food trial). Maybe it is an ulcer coming out through stool? Again, just a tiny bit.
Sorry so long-I have a lot of questions going through my head about it and am trying not to freak out or overreact. I’m thinking keep giving him squash and see how next movement is and see gi this week?
Thanks everyone.

I think 14 days of bananas may be the problem. Myles became constipated after only three days. Now I only him bananas for one to two days, and only if he’s getting a vegetable as well (which he usually does).
When Myles was constipated I began giving him pears every day and they seemed to help a lot. Also, I’ve heard white grape juice works great and is easy on tummies. I bought some but Myles is not a good bottle drinker and wouldn’t drink it. Fortunately the pears helped.
When Myles doesn’t poop for more than two days I use a thermometer to relax that little sphincter and help him pass his stool before it becomes too hard. It always works for him. Maybe you could try that until he’s stools soften again. If his stools are very hard, you maybe use glycerine suppositories for a day or two to get things moving again. (I haven’t had to use them with Myles yet, but my doctor said it would be fine if I had to).
As for squash, for Myles they seem to be the least constipating vegetable for him. They seem to make his stools soft and easy to pass.
These babies! They always give us something to worry about!! That’s great that Ian is sleeping well and his temperament is good. He’s probably just fine

I just read Dr. Sear’s site for info and he said the same thing about bananas. ARGGHHH! Finally a food he can eat (and loves) and of course it causes him an additional problem. We’ve even only been giving them every other day. Almost done with squash trial so will start something more fiberfull next week. I was thinking barley because its full of it, but am nervous about a cereal. How do you prepare your pears? Or do you use a jar? I’m nervous of jars just because of additives and Ian’s stomach is SO sensitive. Did you ever try pear juice? Ian screamed so much on that but I hear the sorbitol count is higher in the juice??
I’m thinking of a little babylax too. Don’t want him to fear to have another poop and start a continual problem. Plus, he didn’t get much out.
Thanks so much again. BTW- I LOVE the name Miles! We almost picked it

Supposedly there’s no additives. I read the ingredients and it says just pears and water. Do you know something I don’t know about baby food???
I’m too lazy to make my own, but I think pears would probably be easy to make. Just steam them and puree them. Pears seem to have a wonderful effect on helping Myles move his bowels, so I hope Ian can tolerate them.
I’ve never used Barley cereal. (I live in a small town and you can’t even get it here!). I used oatmeal with all of my babies. Myles does fine on it. I’ve read other mom’s post that Barley can be gassy…but I really don’t know. Have you tried oatmeal?
I didn’t know they made baby laxative. I’d try the glycerine suppository first because all it does is soften the stool and it doesn’t effect the GI tract at all. Maybe call your doctor tomorrow and ask about it. I’ve used it on babies when I was a nanny (by request of parents of course) and it always helped. Also, if he’s willing, just drinking plain water helps, too. Myles won’t drink it so I can’t use that remedy with him.
Thanks for the compliment on Myles’ name. My husband picked it. I love it, too but he was sold on it from the first time I mentioned it when I was pregnant with my first! Ian is a very cute name, too.
May 7, 2006 at 8:47 pm #7637AnonymousInactiveOkay, so I went out with a friend for her birthday today and my husband said Ian had his squash and a huge, mushy poo immediately afterwards. No blood. So seems the fiber helped. We never tried Oatmeal but I have some here and I think that we’ll try it tomorrow. Thought barley just because of fiber but seems like veggies help and it maybe was an isolated incident. The only thing the jars say is the asorbic acid added (I know that’s vitamin c but I was guessing it was an additive?). Believe me, I am so not against jars at all. Just cautious with Ian as everything seems to affect the gut.
If we are lucky enough to have a second child (although I’m terrified after these last few months) I may have to steal that name if it’s a boy!! So great. Thanks on Ian too! I have to say it honestly was the name that I said I’d give my little boy since I was a little girl (corny huh??). But it stayed with me and dh loves it too.

I definitely don’t think it’s corny that you had Ian’s named picked out since you were a little girl because I had Liza’s name picked out when I was 13!! I prayed and prayed that I’d have a little girl named Liza one day, and here she is!
I hope the oatmeal goes well. My three all did fine on it, even the two with reflux.
I forgot about the asorbic acid. I think it is added to preserve the foods but I guess I don’t worry about it since it’s a vitamin and natural. I’ve been fortunate that none of my babies have had any food sensitivities, except for milk, so I haven’t had to be as cautious as you have. That must be so hard. I don’t think I could take it if I had to worry about every little thing I fed Myles. He’s hard enough to take care of without that to worry about, too.
Good luck with the upcoming new foods in Ian’s life. I hope they all go well.

Glad to hear Ian had a big mushy poo. I agree it could have just been a
buildup from all the bananas. As constipated as you know Marisa has
been at times, we’ve actually never seen blood – but I would guess in
Ian’s case this time it was just from so much straining. We do use mainly jars – M likes them better. I only use Earth’s Best or
Gerber Tender Harvest (both organic) and I will use ones with ascorbic
acid but not ones with citric acid. Some of the veggies have just the
food and water – like Gerber TH peas. If you are going to make pears,
you can just cut them, steam them (and peal them after, which will be
really easy after steaming) and puree them with some of the steaming
water. Then you can freeze them in ice cube trays, transfer to a
freezer bag and defrost 1-2 cubes at a time.We have had good success with oatmeal. Besides M now refusing to eat it
– but other than that… Barley seemed to upset her tummy when we tried
it. -
