Any insight? I dont have to dose info with me since it’s not ready to be picked up yet. Any advice or things I should know when starting?? Thank you SO much, I’d be SO lost without this board, it’s invaluable!!!
KatieJune 30, 2008 at 3:06 pm #53205hellbenntKeymasterJune 30, 2008 at 3:11 pm #53206AnonymousInactiveI’m NO expert (& got all my info from these fabulous ladies) but since we just we just went through this I’ll share my experience & what seemed to work.
We started on Zantac as well… things got better, then got REAL bad (my son was 3wks @ the time).Started Prevacid the next wk but it was a way too low dose & it was compounded suspension (that I suspect was not prepared correctly & had a flavor-both making it not as effective). The following week (which was actually last week) I faxed my general ped the marci-kids info & he immediately called in the max dose of Prevacid solutabs. That is when we finally saw relief. He’ll be 6wks tomorrow & the reflux seems to finally be under control. In the meantime though… split your Prevacid dose to 2x/day. Continue the max dose (10mg/kg per day) for Zantac, but split it to 2x/day. Give it b/w (@ least 4hrs) your Prevacid doses… & give it w/ Mylanta (1.5mL is what we do). Also, if you have solutabs make sure you’re giving them 2hrs after a feeding & 30-60min before. (Very tricky for such young babies I know).Hope this helps!June 30, 2008 at 3:15 pm #53208AnonymousInactiveThank you for info but I have too be honest, this is SO overwhleming and very hard for me to understand(lamen here). I know the med is a liquid form. Are you saying that isnt what I want?? I’m so completely confused and while my baby is screaming it’s impossible for me to think. SO STRESSED out!!! 🙁
June 30, 2008 at 3:17 pm #53210AnonymousInactiveThank you but I can’t even break down most of this information!! Is there a bottom line, somewhere..please?! MY lo has been screaming for three hours and I can’t think never mind figure all of this out!!!
June 30, 2008 at 3:20 pm #53211AnonymousInactiveThe liquid form is the compounded suspension, yes. If it was prepared correctly & doesn’t have a flavor then it will be fine. Try it for 5-7 days (w/ the Zantac) & then if things don’t seem to be getting better I would fax your ped w/ the info (I will email you my exact fax if you’d like since it sounds like a similar situation).
I know what it’s like to have a screaming baby… today is literally the 1st day that he hasn’t screamed all day long (besides when he’s nursing). It’s amazing.Sorry, that sounded bad – I’m not rubbing it in… just saying that w/ the proper dosing it WILL get better.erinntx 2008-06-30 15:21:55 June 30, 2008 at 3:27 pm #53212AnonymousInactiveAnd if it is flavored will the pharmicist remix it w/out flavor or do I need to call the doc for a new script?
June 30, 2008 at 3:31 pm #53214AnonymousInactiveCan you point me to the area on the Marci-site that speaks to the solutabs? I cant seem to locate it?? I am going to call my doc this afternoon-as soon as I get back with the medicine and see what type it is(flav vs non flav).
June 30, 2008 at 3:33 pm #53215AnonymousInactiveI cannot answer the questions about whether or not a pharmacist would re-make it. We do have a pharmacist on the board and another member whose husband is a pharmacist. Maybe one of them can help.
I know how frustrating it is to get the “right” med and the “right” dose. hang in there. It took us a while to iron it out (I had a big time screamer and a 2 yo that whined all day b/c he wasn’t getting any attention) and it was tough in the meantime but worth it in the end. We had success with the prevacid solutabs & the nexium powder packets (not at the same time, we used nexium during 5-8 months old when landen was at his worst) . As bad as it seems now, this too shall pass.June 30, 2008 at 3:34 pm #53216AnonymousInactiveIf I understand correctly (from what I read on here – someone correct me if I’m wrong) – if it’s flavored it’s still ‘effective’ for a week, but loses it’s effectiveness after that. Ours was flavored & I definitely noticed some relief after 5-6 days… but so diff’t once it was the max dose w/ solutabs.
So, I would use what you have for now.I hope this helps & I truly feel for you right now – it’s miserable.erinntx 2008-06-30 15:44:04 June 30, 2008 at 3:40 pm #53218AnonymousInactiveI am no expert with compounds as we never used it but dh is a pharmacist as Jill mentioned and he even admits that most pharmacist don’t compound anything this complicated properly mainly b/c they aren’t taught it in school. I do think it is somewhat effective with the flavoring but the stability of it is at most 2wks and if you add flavor that decreases the stability even more. I would push for the solutabs and if that isn’t an option then go for the capsules which have to be given with a bit of applesauce or apple juice and still wait the 30-60 min to feed. I know this is so much to take in but things will get better. If you can give that baby to someone you trust and take 30-60 min to get your head on straight first chance you get so that you can be the best advocate for your baby possible. Good Luck, you are on the right track.
