We have FINALLY started Ben on whole milk this week. I have been nursing him about 4 times a day now for FOREVER, and I’m ready to get my boobs back!
Anyway, he’s done fine on yogurt for a long, long time, and has been fine with cheese for quite some time too. He hit the 18 mo. mark, so I thought we should give it a go.
Problem is, I can’t tell if he’s tolerating it or not. I am watching for every little thing, so I could be overreacting here. DH certainly thinks I am. Anyway, Ben’s previous MSPI symptoms were face rash, mucousy poo and horrible gas, and no sleeping. We have none of that right now, thank God. BUT, he has gotten the hiccups after drink milk, every time, AND he had a hard time pooping today. That might not sound like a big deal, but he is usually a 2-3 times a day pooper… goes like clockwork after every meal. The reason I am a bit worried is that my daughter has had constipation issues since she was a baby. And I have always wondered if it were a milk problem. The doc. has always brushed this aside. He has his 18 mo. check up on Thurs. which was another reason I wanted to start the milk now, so if there were problems, I could see the doctor about it soon.Should I keep giving him milk for a few more days and see??? He isn’t much of a fan, so really he’s only been drinking about 2 ounces/day.Dh just thinks his system needs some time to adjust. What do you all think?March 18, 2008 at 8:35 pm #49132AnonymousInactiveNaomi,
I don’t want to say you are overreacting, but I know where you are coming from. I started Cooper on whole milk on the 2nd or 3rd of this month and the only issue we are having is hiccups but not after every feeding just 1 or 2 times/day but not always when he is having milk. I would say give it a few more days. I was very scared to but if he isn’t having any other of his usual symptoms I wouldn’t be to worried about the hiccups. We do gas drops and a paci and they seem to help them go away. I will keep my fingers crossed for you and your boobs.

If those are all his symptoms are, maybe he just needs to adjust to it? Or, if you do have to stop, at least he’s not a big fan, so it won’t really matter if you put it off a few days.
Good luck, we’ll be pulling for you!!March 18, 2008 at 11:18 pm #49135AnonymousInactiveI would maybe give it a few more days to see as well. The constipation is the more concerning symptom to me. This was one of (my) Ben’s first intolerance symptoms to cow’s milk and goat’s milk. Hopefully that was just a coincidence, or simply an adjustment to a new food. Let us know how the next few days go – hopefully he can handle it without problem!

His little body probably does need time to adjust. I’d say give it a little while longer and if other symptoms arise besides the constipation then maybe I’d stop?!? It sounds like he’s almost there though and I hope it goes smoothly from here on out!! GOOD LUCK!

remember that milk is hard for anyone to digest as it is.. so it may just take some time.. maybe he can have half rice milk and half cows milk.. that way it isnt too harsh on his system..and he still gets stuff he needs..and is a way of not nursing.. plus i would think that yogurt and cheese is plenty already if you are concerned about meeting nutritional requirements..keep us updated!!March 19, 2008 at 9:34 pm #49154AnonymousInactiveI would give him a little more time. If he’s going to have a problem with whole milk it will probably start to build up in his system and the symptoms will get worse.
That being said, our ped brushed off my concerns about Kaelyn’s constipation and I found out later that 25% of people with milk allergies have constipation issues (rather than diarrhea, which is the more common problem).March 20, 2008 at 2:27 pm #49174AnonymousInactiveWell, we are still going with the whole milk. His poop is still much more firm than before, but yesterday he went three times, so that’s a bit more normal. Plus, no more hiccups. I’m hoping that it just took him some time to get used to it. I’ll keep you all posted. He is still only drinking a few ounces or so. He doesn’t much like the cold milk vs. the warmth and comfort of breastmilk! I think the only reason he is drinking any at all is because he sees Claire do it, and he would jump off a bridge if she did it first!
March 20, 2008 at 8:24 pm #49192AnonymousInactiveSo glad to hear that he is adjusting better. I will continue to keep my fingers crossed for you. I bet he is going to do just fine and will even start liking the cold milk too.
