I just thought I’d post this for those who are interested. As some of you may be aware, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (aka NASPGHAN) is the professional association to which most pediatric GIs belong. They are committed to advancing the clinical practice in this area, and are leaders of research in pediatric gastroenterology, including the area of pediatric GERD. They outline the standards of practice for treatment of infant reflux, which are the standards that ped GIs are supposed to follow for the assessment and treatment of GERD in infants and children. They have a website http://www.naspghan.org and it is full of all kinds of valuable information related to infant reflux and other GI issues. They also have a list of all its members by location as a tool to help find a physician.
I know that many of us often feel lost trying to understand the rationale of our physicians when treating our children. Some doctors are just following dated practices, but others, such as mine, follow this protocol. It’s very detailed so I’ll post the full version and then the abridged version. I’ve found it to be very helpful to me, as these are the standards that our doctors are told to follow.

Again, I just wanted to put it out there for those of you who are interested. I recognize that this information is very different than that of marci-kids and I have sent a query to them for their comment.

But in the long run she has been right about him and his treatment. I would hate to be a ped, honestly, because of these very issues, new medicines and conditons are popping up so frequently that soemtimes they just don’t know what to use or what will work. One of the main reasons I respect our doctor so much is that when AIdan was down to 7 oz a day (with cereal however so that actually was more calories that 7 oz straight formula), yet still gaining more than his fair share of weight, She looked at me and said “really, sometimes we just don’t understand why things happen . I appreciated her honesty!!We just worked together from that point on to find something that worked for Aidan.
