So much for saying Sarah was feeling better from her ear infection! When I took her to the doctor last week, she had the early stages of a runny nose but I had hoped it would just go away. Now a week later she has a full blown stuffy/runny nose and is NOT a happy girl. Poor thing can’t breathe to eat, can’t sleep…it’s been miserable. To top it off she has been painfully grabbing her ears again. I called the doctor hoping she could just prescribe a 2nd round of antibiotics over the phone and she refused. So now I have to take her in again. I have school tomorrow and then I’m off for Spring Break. DH is off the whole week. So we’re debating on whether he should take her tomorrow or we can both take her Thursday morning. Right now I’m leaning towards tomorrow! She needs another/different antibiotic than the Omnicef she’s on now.
Soooooo, when talking to my doc. on the phone she finally asked “How many ear infections has she had?” I said “This will make number 7!”. She is going to refer us to a ped. ENT. Unfortunately that is over an hour away but it’s worth it to make all these infections go away.
Well, surprise surprise she is screaming in her bed. Gotta go! Poor baby!

April 3, 2007 at 9:08 pm #29452AnonymousInactiveThanks Denise!
I wanted to ask everyone…what on earth can you do for a stuffy nose? She screams bloody murder with the sucker ball and saline drops. The amount of crying she does after that defeats the purpose of even sucking it out b/c she creates more. I have a warm mist humidifier in her room. I also have been giving her some zyrtec we had left over from her ear infection in February. Does Benadryl work better? Can I give the two together? I’m also having to give Motrin b/c I know her ears are bothering her so I don’t want to give her TOOOOOOOOOOOO many medicines…she’s already on Zegerid and her antibiotic but man I’d do anything for her to be able to breathe!
April 3, 2007 at 9:09 pm #29453AnonymousInactiveohh amy, i am sooo sorry! believe me I KNOW what you are going through! its the worse thing when they cant sleep and cant eat! hopefully she is just grabbing at her ears..and they arent infected again! if they are , i would go to the ped. ent.. i know for myself though, that when i get sick at all..my ears get it right away.. i went to an ent when i was younger..and they said something about a canal in my ear not growing straight or something.. i am not sure.. but that whenever i get a cold it goes right to my ear too .. i guess from the drip .
but let me know what happens at the ped’s..
April 3, 2007 at 9:13 pm #29455AnonymousInactiveohh i think we were posting at the same time;)
but, that is exactly what i was asking about in my post.. its the biggest pain when they cant breath.. cuz than they cant sleep or eat. i am not sure whatelse you can do for it! from my post, i learned it is kind of a controversy over cold meds for children. but, i did notice that i bought a tylenol cough and cold that says on the box “new decongestant” so, maybe its safer than the older ones? i havnt used it yet, because i am a little scared.. but i think if he wakes up all night because he is so uncomfortable.. i might give in and give him a bit! or i would give the benadryl, but i cant seem to figure out how much to give! the dr.sears website says as much as tylenol..but than they also say for his weight a huge amount which is more than the tylenol that he recieves! soo..if you figure it out let me know as well!
April 3, 2007 at 9:17 pm #29457AnonymousInactivePoor Sarah! Uggg…how I hate those stuffy nose ailments. They can’t eat, they can’t sleep and they are miserable.
As for what helps, I really don’t think there’s a whole lot you can do besides use the saline drops, and maybe some benadryl. I’m not sure if you can use Zyrtec and Benadryl together. I probably would not since they can both have a sedative effect. One thing I read is that cool mist is better than warm mist for humidifiers. The bulb syringe never worked very well for my babies either. As soon as your done sucking out the nose it just fills right up again.
I hope you can get her on another antibiotic soon.
April 3, 2007 at 9:19 pm #29459AnonymousInactiveo.k from my post.. there is a suggestion for “little noses”.. you might want to try that too!
April 3, 2007 at 10:46 pm #29466AnonymousInactivePoor little Sarah. Alana has been snuffly in the nose and I have found benadryl to help a little. I hope she feels better soon.
April 4, 2007 at 12:58 am #29468AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry Sarah’s so miserable! Vicks VapoRub might help clear her nose a little. It’s really more for coughs, but I’ve found it helps a stuffy nose too.
I hope she feels better soon.

So sorry to hear little sweetie is having troubles. My neice who has a little girl said that she uses something that they put in the bathtub when she has a cold that really helps her out. I can’t remember what the name of the stuff is but she said it works wonders, especially right before bed. She then runs the warm humidifier. I have also used the Little Noses Saline Gel and put it around Abbys nostrils which seems to help some too. Good luck with the ENT visit and hope she feels better soon!!!

April 4, 2007 at 2:38 pm #29508AnonymousInactiveLittle Noses has decongestant drops. I know it’s a bit scary to use these, but Ben’s ped. suggested using them to help clear up his ears one time. The bottle says to use 2-3 drops for children over 2. I just put one drop in each nostril and it really seems to help clear up the stuffiness.
April 4, 2007 at 3:07 pm #29515AnonymousInactiveI have used the same drops as Naomi, but Brianna is close to 24lbs, which is the weight limit for a two year old (haha…she has a budda belly!), but using one drop is probably a good idea too. They really do seem to help.
Also, ditto to what Christine said about the cool mist humidifier. Benedryl was super helpful to Brianna, but she has never had Zyrtec so I am not sure if she can take them together.
I hope she if feeling better SOON!
April 4, 2007 at 4:04 pm #29528AnonymousInactiveI’ll go to the store today and get some Little Noses. I’m sure she’ll scream if I go anywhere near her nose but maybe it will be worth it. She doesn’t even like to have her mouth wiped off after she eats!!! I had forgotten about the Vicks Baby Rub…I’ll try that too.
DH took her to the doctor today and she now has a double ear infection (it was just one ear last week). They prescribed Zithromax so I’ll be anxious to give her dose. DH had to take her back to daycare after the appointment b/c he was leaving the house before I got off work. Daycare text messaged me and said to leave her until 5 (instead of 3:45 when I usually get there) so I could relax and have some mommy time. Yay me! Now…what am I going to do with myself for 2 hours? Nap? Hot bath? Pack? Look for a place to live?

I hear you on the mouth wiped bit. Alana just screams. We now just give her a facial wipe and she kind of dose it herself when she trys to put it in her mouth (she never trys to chew or swallow it or anything…very bizzare).
LOL. Maybe you could pitch a tent somewhere?
