Splenda???

Spoke to the Gi again today in regards to my son not eating well and they suggested me using a sweetner in his milk such as splenda. Has anyone else heard of this. I thought artifical sweetners were not safe for little ones. When I was pregant they told me not to use them so I was just curious. Thanks again

Splenda is a laboratory derived version of sugar. It is heat stable and you can bake with it. I have heard of other moms using it to help get their lo’s to take things like Neocate b/c of the flavor it adds. When I was pregnant that was the only sweetener that I used that wasn’t sugar. I however didn’t use it often. I am pretty confident in the safety of Splenda since it is heat stable it doesn’t “breakdown” like the others.

I use Splenda in my son’s Elecare. He has been on Elecare for two months now. This is what our ped GI recommended for us. I know that Neocate makes flavoring for their formula. You might check the website.

If you use the Splenda, just use the smallest amount that it takes for your little one to drink the formula. We use 1 packet per bottle. I sarted out using more, b/c it took a couple packets for my ds to like the Elecare, but I have weaned him down to just one packet. I buy a box of 1,000 packets at Sams Club for about $20.

I’ve been looking into switching from Splenda to something else, but just haven’t yet. I like that I can buy a huge box of Splenda; since I go through soo much. Haven’t found a great big box of Xylitol packets yet. I think I’ve found like a box of 70 or so. That would last like 10 days. Our local health food store doesn’t even carry the xylitol packets. =(
