DS is 5 months and has been on reflux meds since he was bout 8 weeks. He does very well on the Omneprezole (5ml 2x/day) – is isn’t cranky whatsoever anymore due to his reflux.
However, as most can attest, the meds have done NOTHING for his spit up. It’s still atrocious. He’s been on oatmeal 1-2x a day and purees (2-3 oz once a day so far) for over a month and no improvement to his spit up.
As exhausting as the every-sopping clothing and burp rags are, though, my issue though is sleep. He’s still waking up twice at night to eat.
While I realize his stomach is still small and he’s not on real food yet, quite frankly, we’re exhausted trying to determine if he NEEDS these nighttime bottles or if he’s just doing it out of comfort.
We’ve had a solid bedtime routine since he was 2 months. For the past month or so, it’s expanded to food at 5:30, 6 oz bottle around 6. Bath 6:30, bed by 7 (sometimes bath and bed are pushed up a little).
Because his spit up is still bad, so much of what we give him starting at 5:30 comes back up by 7. So he’s still waking 10-11 p.m. and then often again 3-4 a.m. He drains 6-7 oz each time and (eventually) puts himself back to sleep.
He takes 5-6 oz bottles about 4 times during the day (prior to his nighttime food and bottle). I feel he SHOULD be able to sleep longer stretches.. am I wrong?
The GOOD news is, because he takes night bottles when he’s so tired, his reflux doesn’t really affect him. Very little spitting up, and goes back down to sleep (MOST of the time). BUT I’m at a cross roads….
is it waking up at 10 because he’s still hungry from losing half his 5:30 meal? If so, can we eliminate the 4 a.m bottle?
