Not sure if this is where I should post this or not. Anyway, this morning when Cooper was in the floor playing, I noticed that his neck looked alittle red. I had to fight with him to tilt his head back and what did I find but spit up stuck in the crease in his neck under this chin. I have not ever noticed this before, but it concerns me. He gets a bath every other day (tongiht is bath night) and he truely enjoys then which is why I do them as often as I do. My question is what would be a good way to prevent this spit up build up so to speak? I thought about baby powder to help dry it up, but I am not sure. He hates to have his head tilted so I have a hard time cleaning that area. Thanks for any ideas/suggestions.
May 30, 2007 at 11:27 am #34948AnonymousInactivedo not use baby powder. we were told to never even use it on the butt. babies can inhale it and die. my sons father is a firefighter/paramedic and he has seen and also heard fom his co workers of babies dying because parents used baby powder.
spit up is inevitable, i just wipe him off if i see any. or bibs can help catch it.

Caden has the same problem (thanks to a chubby double chin and lots of folds!), so what I do is clean under the neck folds really well in the morning and at night with a warm washcloth. Then, after I dry it off, I rub a little Vaseline into the creases under his neck. It helps propel the liquid and doesn’t get as irritated. Lately his hasn’t been red at all thanks to this new regiment.
P.s. Sometimes as an alternate to the Vaseline, I will rub a natural baby balm under his neck, because it smells great, and it helps heal irritated skin. The one I use is called Earth Mama Angel Baby Herbal Diaper Rash & First Aid Salve. It smells so good I don’t remember which online store I bought it from, but you can Google it and find a store that sells it.
May 30, 2007 at 3:35 pm #34990AnonymousInactiveWe had/have this problem too. And I did basically the same as Emily, but just used Aquaphor.
When he gets his bath, now that it’s warm, there’s a nice line of dirty gunk in his neck crease! GROSS!

May 30, 2007 at 3:46 pm #34997AnonymousInactiveWe have the same problem Beth! I’ve even seen where some of the solutab beads have gotten stuck in the fold in Landen’s fat little neck and they turn black (or at least I think it is the beads that or doing that). We are about to switch to doing baths every night (b/c he is starting daycare monday) but if it wasn’t normally bath night, I would use those disposable Johnsons washcloths under his neck and rinse him real good.
May 30, 2007 at 7:02 pm #35014AnonymousInactiveI have always had the same problem with Paige. What I find helps is tucking a burp pad under her chin when I feed her and burp her, as that is when she drools and dribbles the most. It really helps to catch everything and keep her neck dry. I often find the little Prevacid solutabs beads under there too – now I tuck a kleenex under her chin before giving her the Prevacid. It does seem to help.
May 30, 2007 at 8:14 pm #35016AnonymousInactiveI had this problem with my girls too. I always did what Sheri did and it helped alot; tuck a cloth diaper or burp towel under their chin while they eat.
Also check regularily even if it’s not a bath night to see if the neck needs some sponging.
On other thing…sometimes babies will develop a yeast infection in their little fat rolls. It can appear white and cheesey and may look like milk but may actually be yeast. If it doesn’t clean off easily and the skin looks really irritated it may be an infection. A little monistat twice a day will clear it right up. (Ask your doc first). Liza had this a couple of times. (She had three chins!).
May 31, 2007 at 8:48 am #35058AnonymousInactiveWe were big Aquaphor fans here. Addy gets a bath every night bc she loves them so much and we use Aveeno bath stuff and lotion so her skin never dries out. (The ones with harsh perfumes tend to dry the skin out more.) But if a bath every night isn’t an option, I would just use a warm wash cloth and get under his little chin really good and makes sure it dries afterwards. (We dabbed it dry with a soft towel and then applied the Aquaphor.)
Hope he heals up soon!
May 31, 2007 at 8:52 am #35059AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies for all the suggestions. We have plenty of aquaphor on hand here so I will probably use that the next time I see it. I washed his little neck/chin really well yesterday morning and by bath time last night everything looked fine. My biggest problem is it appears that he likes to keep his chin tucked to his chest so trying to get him to lift his chin is a challenge, but we will keep working on that. Thanks again for all the help.
