Some of you may remember my rants about Ian not doing any consonants for months until last few weeks out of nowhere-he began mammma, babbaa, gaga, lala, etc (no d’s yet unfortunately – poor dh). Well, within days, he started calling me MOMee (way too cute) and now starting yesterday, he’s pointing to our cats saying ‘gat’. (We’re pretty sure that’s his version of cat-lol). I’m just over the moon with how fast he caught up and had to share with everyone as you’ve had months of listening to me complain. It’s so beautiful.
I especially hope Thais reads this as I know this is on your mind as well. I just want to again remind you-it came out of nowhere-and Matthew will surprise you when you least expect it too I’m sure. Big hugs to you both.

August 24, 2006 at 8:27 am #12150AnonymousInactiveThat’s great Tracy. Thanks for sharing! It is so cute… especially that first mama or mommee…. melts your heart.
August 24, 2006 at 9:41 am #12162AnonymousInactiveHooray for you Ian!!
How cute that he’s talking already. I’m so gald to hear how well Ian is doing.
August 24, 2006 at 11:11 am #12169AnonymousInactiveAugust 24, 2006 at 11:12 am #12170AnonymousInactiveThanks guys-we’re so happy with the growth too! It truly is as everyone says. Once they start to feel better, watch out! They do lots of catching up and quick too! Later this morning, he mimicked me vocally-dropped his toy and I said ‘uh-oh’ and then he said ‘uh-oh’ back and then we kept going back and forth with it. So phenomenal-I won’t lie-I never knew that I would see the day.
He’s still working with EI on fine motor skills which some are still delayed but aspects of it are moving forward. I really think because he missed that stage when he was 4-5 months when he was hospitalized or just feeling crappy in his bouncer and now he just doesn’t want to focus on it-too busy walking and exploring. Very physical little boy.
August 24, 2006 at 11:45 am #12174AnonymousInactiveTracy, just wondering about the vibrating toys that your therapist recommended. Were they z-vibe? Did they help? Would he pick them up and put them to his face and/or mouth while they were vibrating. Hailey is becoming more and more defensive around her mouth and face, and since our OT is a waste of time (and I discharged her) I’m really at a loss how to proceed. Every time I put something (a cloth, g-d forbid, a toothbrush or a medicine dropper or even a spoon to her mouth) she just screams “NO NO NO NO” and she starts screaming and crying hysterically.
August 24, 2006 at 1:10 pm #12185AnonymousInactiveOh Lori, I’m sorry. Yes, the z vibe was great for us. He will pick it up and use it but it took a little time. It also comes with a spoon, or other attachments that he liked. The biggest help for us was actually the chewy tube. He uses it in his stroller or while watching baby einstein in his chair. I can look up where I order them and post the websites?
I will post every tip that they give us in that area for you too-just in case it might help.
August 24, 2006 at 3:30 pm #12203AnonymousInactiveOh, my gosh. I think I’m going insane. I actually just typed a response to this thread in the address bar of my browser…
Anyhow, thanks Tracy. I think we might have a chewy tube. Not sure, but is it like an accordian looking tube? If so, what did you do with it? Hailey’s problem isn’t putting things into her mouth, but letting other people get into her mouth, or touch her face, or even her hands.

August 24, 2006 at 4:09 pm #12207AnonymousInactiveThe chewy tube looks actually like a letter T kind of like a wine corkscrew. Ian has opposite problem-if I put it in his mouth originally-he’d be fine but if I put it in his hand, he’d throw it away. I just kept giving it to him in his mouth and then it would drop out for awhile, he’d give up waiting and start doing it himself. Took awhile and he was popping his bottom teeth at the time so I’m sure it felt good on his gums. Also, you can buy an extract (which has alcohol so only a teeny bit) that the ST recommended from the talktools supply company. Make it a little more appealing. Maybe it is http://www.talktools.com . I’ll check when I get home.
Thanks Robin!
August 28, 2006 at 7:41 am #12455AnonymousInactiveTracy – glad to hear that things are going so well for you and thanks for thinking about Matthew! I guess we are still not hearing many consonants but the pointing is fun isn’t it and when you ask them to do something adn they do it you just start wondering if they understand everything else!! 🙂
August 28, 2006 at 6:23 pm #12498AnonymousInactiveToo cute – Way to go Ian!!!!!
August 28, 2006 at 9:44 pm #12512AnonymousInactiveThanks Tracy. Sorry I missed your reply. If you do find that info, I’d love to know what the site is (I tried your link and it didn’t work).

This is a good one http://www.specialkidszone.com/
on the chewy tubes there is actually some type of logic to using teh different colours… if you google it hopefully you will find it – one is used before the other… maybe Tracy knows.
On the z-vibe – it works well for some people but i think that the tip is detachable and therefore some people don’t like it and like it even less for older children
