For those of you familiar with Lucas, this is our first soy trial. He’s nearly 19 mos old and after taking out gluten I’m very motivated to find something we can add back into out diets!
Question: I gave Lucas a little more than one oz of soy milk today, around 11:50 am. By 1:45 he was down for a nap, which is right in line with his schedule recently.
Should I see fussiness within the first two hours if the soy is a problem? He was great prior to hte nap, during hte first two hours after having soy. Also, I know that milk proteins can build up in their systems, is this true of soy proteins as well?
Any other things I need to keep in mind for a trial like this? I’m keeping everything else the same, not doing anything different, except for the soy.
If soy proteins were to cause sleeping problems ….should I see this during both naps and nighttime? Just curious if there is an answer for that, I know all kids are different and I wouldn’t put anything past Lucas with our terrible sleeping history…
Thanks!!

We recently did a soy milk trial with Owen – he’s been ok with soy foods and didn’t do well with regular milk so we tried soy milk with him. We didn’t see any negative reaction for a day or so but then he got diarreah and was really fussy. It’s a bit strange since he does fine with foods but for some reason the soy milk didn’t work well for us. So we didn’t see anything for a couple of days but then it was obviously not a good thing.
Of course now your post has me wondering about the soy in his diet as Owen’s been sleeping really poorly, but I’m going to try to get that out of my head for now since that would really kill our menu around here!
Anyway, I think if you were going to have a severe reaction you’d see right away, but it may take a little while longer to see any minor reactions. Good luck – I hope that your good luck continues!

Of course, intolerances is something completely different but I would advise that you give it a good trial (2 weeks or so) because so many normal baby things can be confused intolerance reactions.
Good luck!

April 6, 2006 at 11:32 am #5505AnonymousInactivemy advise is to go slooooooooowwwwwww. just one ounce a day for a week and then increase to two next week and so on. also, try other “soy” foods: tofu pups, soy cheese, etc. and see how he does. i agree with stacey, the allergy you’d see almost immediately and the intolerance you’d see most likely after a few days — a few weeks, thus the rationale behind adding a little bit at a time.
good luck and go lucas!!!
