hi everyone! it’s been so long, and i’m sorry to say, i need some advice
our little madelyn frances joined our family on may 26th and by most accounts, she really is a dream. however, she’s had some green, mucously stools and other behaviors that lead me to start taking soy out of my diet (i’ve been very strictly dairy-free for almost a year already). it’s only been about five days and her ped mentioned that it takes two weeks of soy-free eating to see a real difference. the diet isn’t terrible, if i think ahead, but i do have some questions…
i’ve read soy lecithin and soybean oil are 99% of the time okay b/c they are a fat and not a protein…i’ve been baking with shortening sticks from earth balance and they contain soybean oil. i’ve also been using some vegan chocolate chips that have soy lecithin in them. just want to make sure i’m not shooting myself in the foot by eating these…
also, i’ve had a heck of a time finding soy-free bread. would you guys save me from reading every bread label in the grocery store and share some of your favorite soy-free bread brands? that’d be so awesome!
she has some fussy hours mixed with very content times, and some days she’s your typical sleeping/eating newborn. her sleeping at night and during the day is fairly good, however i can hear her reflux at times and that does wake her up (this is almost always at night or early morning, like the four o’clock nursing). again, other times this is not an issue…so far we are just doing mylanta with, until today (lol!), good results.
any thoughts you have would be great. i trust you ladies with, well, most everything! ha! happy to be back, i think, lol!!

Dairy & Soy Free Shortening:Refined coconut oil is a great substitute for shortening (refined doesn’t taste like coconut, but unrefined dose). You can use just a little less of it than the recipe calls for – about 7/8 of a cup is equivalent to 1 cup butter/margarine/shortening. There is another shortening sub called Spectrum shortening, with is palm oil based. I haven’t been able to find it here, but I know it is much more available in the US. I’ve heard good things about it too. I believe the conversion for this is 1:1.Dairy & Soy Free Chocolate Chips:Enjoy Life makes a yummy dairy and soy free chocolate chip. They are small though, similar to a mini chip. I use these in muffins. You should be able to find these are most health food stores and I believe at Whole Foods too.Paskesz also makes dairy and soy free chocolate chips, and they are the same size as regular chips. I use these in cookies. They are harder to find – I buy them online:Good luck, and congratulations on your new addition!MFPIx22008-06-26 19:18:36

July 4, 2008 at 11:29 am #53401AnonymousInactivethank you so much ladies! sorry it has taken me so long to write back….we hit a HUGE snag here. long and short of it, started pepcid and saw disasterous results (worsen reflux where there used to be fairly mild, screaming for hours, rash, etc). stopped the pepcid and she’s a bit better, but still cries b/t gulps while nursing. after talking with one of my doulas, she suggested several remedies and also eliminating wheat from my diet. i’ve been eating oatmeal like mad every day to keep a good milk supply
(among other things). i’m now ‘enjoying’ some quinoa for breakfast (any suggestions on how to make it taste deeeelicious would be appreciated! lol!).i bought the unrefined coconut oil b/c the store didn’t carry the refined. i’ve had the enjoy life products and love them. i will look further for them beyond the cookies. the thing i’m most concerned about is keeping weight on. i don’t have a problem with this any other time in my life except when i am nursing. with my diet being so limited, i would love some suggestions on how to do that. my supply suffers so quickly with just a little lapse here or there in calories, hydration, etc.
one last question: are herbs wheat-based? what about brown sugar? i take a supplement with goat’s rue, nettle leaf, blessed thistle and fenugreek everyday that really helps my milk supply stay up. my husband was concerned about the brown sugar since it’s plant based and he didn’t know if it was a wheat or not….this is all new territory for me!
thank you so much again! hope those in the US have a great 4th and those in canada had a great canada day (is that correct?).

I had to go dairy/wheat/soy/egg/beef/peanut/treenut free for a long time and it finally caught up with my body. McKenzie was not putting on weight and so I am now having to supplement with formula twice a day…I never thought about my body not being able to keep up because my diet was so limited. Next time I will know.
As for brown sugar…I think it should be fine. I chose to do the sugar in the raw…same thing, and that was fine. There is some Rice and Shine cereal made by Arrowhead mills that is like rice oatmeal that wasn’t half bad if you added vanilla rice milk and brown sugar and cinnamon to it. And Enjoy Life Foods actually makes some “granola” that isn’t half bad if you add rice milk and heat it up.Good luck and keep us posted!July 4, 2008 at 9:59 pm #53419AnonymousInactiveemily–if you have any supply issues, i found the most wonderful product! no, i do not work for this company
the site is motherlove.com and if you go to the breastfeeding products, you will find the tonics that help with supply issues. i wish i had known about this with my first child! they really do help a whole bunch.
and wow, if i had to cut that much out of my diet, well, wow. you go!
