My 2 month old daughter has been suffering with terrible gas and now constipation since she was 2 weeks old. She also suffers from acid reflux (on prevacid). She was on Goodstart Supreme but the doctor just switched her to Goodstart soy and she has been drinking it since Friday. I feel like it is making things worse. I previously had been having to make her poo and now it takes three or four tries for it to work and now is a little hard. I have also been giving her prune juice. I am suppose to be trying the soy until Tuesday. Just so worried I am making things worse. Has anyone else ran into trouble with soy and tummy aches? Is it normal for it to keep making her miserable until 5 days?

but, I would think it is VERY LIKELY that if your baby has trouble with milk proteins then she will have trouble with soy- that’s ‘why’ there’s a term ‘MSPI’- it’s Milk/Soy Protein Intolerance…about 40% (maybe higher!) of those who have difficulties w/ milk proteins also have difficulties with soy…maybe it’s time to try alimentum or nutrimigen?August 26, 2007 at 12:44 pm #41706AnonymousInactiveSo Alimentum will help with the gas and constipation? I thought it was for babies with true allergy symptoms…black poo or blood.
August 26, 2007 at 12:48 pm #41707hellbenntKeymasterthere’s a difference b/t intolerances & allergies-
from the ‘main’ mspi page (stickied in the mspi forum) go to page 2 and scroll down to where you see ‘ggogle cache’- scroll down & just under there you will read the best explanation about the difference b/t allergies & intolerances– nutrimigen/alimentum still have some milk proteins, so they can be helpful with babies with intolerances- babies with allergies tend to wind up on elemental formulas like neocate and elecare…August 26, 2007 at 4:33 pm #41716AnonymousInactiveWe didn’t have constipation with soy, but did have horrible gas until we finally changed to Nutramigen. I agree with Laura that your lo probably has MSPI. Best of Luck, if you do change to Nutramigen or Alimentum, give it 2 weeks to see a true change it will take that long for all the offending proteins and such to get out of their systems. Good Luck.

One of the things a Dr suggested to me once was to try adding 10 extra mls of water to each bottle when we were making them up. This could add up to 50 mls of water every day and possibly help. Not good though if she is having weight gain problems. Good luck. Also, I would avoid any prune juice etc at her age. Her system probably isn’t ready for it yet.

Second son we just went straight to alimentum when we started seeing the same things. I don’t know why we went with alimentum this time to be honest, but I am glad we did as he has issues with corn and the RTF version doesn’t have any. It’s so trial and error, but you’ll get there!TinaOctober 23, 2007 at 4:42 pm #44630AnonymousInactiveGET OFF THE SOY!! The doc told us two weeks on 1 formula…bull..we endured gas crying and constipation for that long time and it was gut wrenching. I would try the Nutramegin because I did see a different baby as far as all that goes, but her reflux is worse….might not be with you though.
Alimentum was horrible on my daughter and she started having bloody stool on it.October 27, 2007 at 9:15 am #44703AnonymousInactiveI probably wouldn’t wait. Our daughter was on soy formula and it made her very constipated and gassy. Like the others said I would try Nutramigen.
October 28, 2007 at 7:22 am #44724AnonymousInactiveOur doc warned us about the soy causing constipation, but it was the only thing that our feeding averter would eat, so I stuck with it. She used it for about a month until the constipation became progressively worse, going from needing suppositories every few days to poop out hard pellets, to not being able to get anything to help her go. Eventually she ended up in the ER to get disimpacted- not pretty.
Some refluxers are prone to constipation due to slow intestinal and gastric motility, and constipating formulas can make it worse. If your daughter is having a hard time pooping on her own, I would ask your ped about giving her something regularly in every bottle like miralax. We’re still having trouble with constipation, but miralax really helps. -
