Ok I had initially posted Zanta..good or bad. So we went to the dr today and the doctor put Ethan on prevacid 15mg a day. Now my question is do I break that up in to 2 doses or keep it as one? Dr said to give it to him first thing in the morning. Dr also said I could put cereal in his bottles. But we already tried that and the rice made him gassy I think and he also did not like the thickness. So question how big of a hole do I make in the nipple so he can get the cereal. I bought oatmeal single grain and also bought the pre made formula as it is thicker. So we are going to try the formula first with no cereal and see what we get. DR said no more Zantac and keep on the metoclopram. Any help would be great if you have a baby on prevacid and have went the cereal route
April 24, 2008 at 8:42 pm #50815hellbenntKeymastercan’t help you on the cereal route…if you do decide to try it (after researching it a bit here), go for beechnut brand or earth’s best brand as they don’t have any milk or soy proteins (gerber does)…
as for the prevacid- keep that baby on zantac, give it 4hrs seperate from the prevacid, for a good 2 weeks. that’s how long it might be for you to see the results of the prevacid and, if you stop the zantac, it’s like your baby isn’t on any medication at all!also the prevacid needs to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes laterI would try giving it 2x a day because baby’s metabolisms are very fast & your baby will zip through the dose in the morning and won’t ‘have anything left’ for the evening…go to http://www.marci-kids.com to check on the dose…hellbennt2008-04-24 20:44:15
April 24, 2008 at 8:46 pm #50816AnonymousInactiveHi!
So glad you got the prevacid for Ethan. I would definitely break it up into 2 doses. 7.5 in the morning and 7.5 in the evening (or before bed). you should still give the zantac or it will seem like he’s on nothing while the prevacid kicks in (usually within 2 weeks). You can also give Cherry Mylanta Supreme if you need to. Just make sure that the Mylanta or Zantac is given spaced 4 hrs from the prevacid.we used cereal without success for about 1 week when Landen was about Ethan’s age and I used the cereal Y cut nipples made for his Dr. Brown’s although I think they were way too big. I’ve heard Dr Brown’s makes a stage 4 nipple now that is perfect for cereal. We used Rice first (gassy, fussier), then oatmeal (didn’t seem to make any bit of difference)What turned things around for us was the PPI drug (a good dose) and the right formula. I’m not trying to change your mind about thickening with cereal. It has worked out for a few, but not many. refluxers tend to have a very immature digestive system.Good luck with the prevacid. Let us know if you have any more questions!April 24, 2008 at 8:50 pm #50817AnonymousInactivesorry you got lots of repeats! i think laura and I were typing at the same time..
April 24, 2008 at 9:03 pm #50819AnonymousInactiveI agree with what both Laura and Jill said. When you split the prevacid in 1/2 make sure you store the other 1/2 in aluminum foil as it is light sensitive and will not be as effective if it is exposed to light all day. Good Luck we started at 7.5mg/day and finally made it all the way to 30 mg/day before I got the baby I knew I could have.
April 24, 2008 at 9:26 pm #50821AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the help guys. I really do not want to start cereal yet as I feel it is way to early. I can only imagine what the cereal would do to his already sensitive digestive system. Ok I will keep him on the Zantac for about a week or so and see what we get. I am also going to check the doasge of the Prevacid. I am sure all doctors start out with small doses. We go back to the Dr on Tuesday for a check up.
April 24, 2008 at 9:28 pm #50823AnonymousInactiveAlso do you think the Zantac once a day would be enough or should I still stick with the 2 times a day for now? And 4 hours from the Prevacid correct?
April 24, 2008 at 9:31 pm #50824AnonymousInactivehey Jill what is it that Kaden is on for a PPi and what formula? Ethan really likes his Similac Alimentum so I do not really want to switch that. It seems like no matter what formula he is on he is a little gassy, but this one actually makes him have normal dirty diapers. That was an issue with everything else that we tried for him so I am hesitant to change.
April 24, 2008 at 9:36 pm #50825AnonymousInactiveOk so now I am scared. This chart says he should only get like 7 mg a day of prevacid, is this 15 mg going to harm him???? And why is it the older they get the less they get??
Age Dose per day (mg/kg/dose) < 3 months 1.5 to 1.75 mg/kg three times per day 3-6 months 1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per day 7 months to 2 years 1 to 1.25 mg/kg three times per day > 2 years 1 mg/kg two or three times per day > 5 years 0.75 to 1 mg/kg two times per day April 24, 2008 at 9:51 pm #50827AnonymousInactiveIf you want to thicken but don’t feel he’s ready for cereal, maybe try something like Simply Thick. It is a gel that thickens without changing the taste of the beverage (formula) it’s added to. Simply Thick is used by a lot of hospitals and nursing homes for patients. It can be kind of expensive, but e-bay seems to be much cheaper.
Make sure you get the nectar variety, not the honey. When we used Simply Thick, we used one packet per bottle and the formula thickened quite nicely.April 24, 2008 at 9:54 pm #50828AnonymousInactiveMaybe I will try that, I just dont think he is ready for cereal. Did it work for your little ones, and how long did you use it?
April 24, 2008 at 10:00 pm #50830AnonymousInactiveI cant seem to find it on ebay????
April 24, 2008 at 10:25 pm #50831AnonymousInactiveAHHHHHH now I see that Prevacid also has lactose. Will this upset his tummy??
April 25, 2008 at 1:48 am #50834AnonymousInactiveI didn’t see that you had a response to your question about the dosing. That chart is 3x per day, so he should be on 7mg 3x/day, so 21 total.
April 25, 2008 at 6:58 am #50836hellbenntKeymasterlactose is milk sugar, notm milk protein- sometims these little ones have a bit of a time adjusting to the new med- if you think you see gassiness or cramping, try (it might be hard) to wait it out- there are other ingredianets, aside from the lactose, that might be affecting him at first- like the aspertame, coloring, flavvoring, etc….ah…so hard! you’re doing great!
yes I’d stick w/ the zantc 2 or even 3x aday……………… -
