Hi
I haven’t been here it a while since Mia is doing well. (Thanks to
everyone or their support) She still spits up if she takes more than
4oz but she’s really not fussy now.I went to the ped today and he said she’s ready to start solids.
I told him that I would rather start when she’s 6mth but he thinks that
she’s ready and she’s also not gaining enough on just formula so she
should start.I am finally becoming (emotionally) better since she’s doing well and
also I don’t want her to start another stomach problem by starting
solids early(?).From what I read, solids can be very tough on infant stomach. I
am guessing that since she just recovering I should hold off. What do you think? Is there disadvantage to starting at 6mth rather than 5mth?
Thanks!
January 31, 2006 at 1:51 pm #374AnonymousInactiveWhat do you mean by she is not gaining enough? We have a problem with weight and bottle refusal, so we did start solids at 5 months. It was hard on Matthew´s belly because we started everything at the same time, veggies, fruits and tons of cereal and a week later meats. But after a couple of weeks of real trouble with gas and him being uncomfortable, the solids do not bother him that much anymore!
Maybe you could start with giving some of her milk thickened with cereal? That would add some calories, would help her start eating with a spoon and you only have to do a few spoonfuls before one of her meals… then in a couple of weeks you could start with something else?
January 31, 2006 at 2:49 pm #379AnonymousInactiveI meant to say “Thanks to everyone FOR their
support” I sounded very rude. He said she’s gaining but not at
optimum rate. I don’t really know what he means. All the
doctors I met thinks I am being paranoid because I am a first time
mom. Mia didn’t poop for 3 days and they said it’s fine.
Mia’s voice suddenly turned hoarse and couldn’t speak and they tell me
she’s fine. I feel that they are not gonna tell me something’s
wrong unless her ribs are showing and foaming at the mouth!!Did you start giving him cereal once or twice a day?

I would highly recommend waiting to start but Emma has had a really hard time with solids. REALLY HARD TIME and she is still very limited to what she can eat. I just think 5 months is to young on there tummies. Of course every baby is different and every doc is going to want to start solids at this age b/c normals babies can handle it. It took Emma three times to handle rice and that was organic brown rice (which I highly recommend organic food)at around 8 months. Green veggies cause her a lot of gas. If you do start with cereal, Alot of people have success with Beechnut. Emma was really little, not FTT, but I still didn’t start solids. As long as she was gaining I didn’t care if she was little, it wasn’t worth her hurting. If she is not gaining well there are other things they can give her if solids are not agreeing. Just make sure you introduce things nice and slow so you know what it is if you do have trouble.
January 31, 2006 at 5:35 pm #396hellbenntKeymasterI started Jonah on solids at 6 months and he wasn’t mspi…
January 31, 2006 at 6:53 pm #401AnonymousInactiveWe started Zach on veggies at 5 months per our ped. She indicated
that sometimes the carbs in cereals can be tough on their tummies so
for reflux/MSPI babies they start with veggies. It worked great
for us but I wouldn’t have had a problem waiting either. Good
luck!February 1, 2006 at 3:03 am #426AnonymousInactiveWe went for all solids straight away — Matthew would not take the bottle, we got a tube and from then on, we switched to solids. He was gassy and uncomfortble but for the first time, he seemed content after his meals! It took some time but now he has adjusted and he takes a lot of stuff already… cereal (however, we are in spain and it is really soft on his tummy vs some of the oatmeals we tried from the US), then we do a vegetable and meat combo for lunch with olive oil (he loves potatoes, carrots and a meat in it, but hates it when we add any leaks), he does banana and pears for mid afternoon and milk and cereal for dinner and the tube overnight. We started all of this all of the sudden but Matthew had lost more than 2 pounds in one week, so we needed a drastic change. We are also doing some yogurt from time to time, but he does not take more than a couple of spoonfuls yet.
I would try it — some people do great and others horrible but you will never know until you try. Matthew loves his spoon and can take any liquid as well as anything really thick, although he prefers thick.
If you only need a few additional calories, then start giving a couple of spoonfuls before the bottle mid morning for example. You can try either a veggie or a fruit or some cereal…. then when she gets a handle of the spoon you can try a few more… or stop… if she is gaining you have a lto of flexibility!!
On the voice… that is pretty funny… Matthew does that too i think. Sometimes he is babbling in this sweet little voice of his and other times it is so hoarse, and he LOVES IT. It is like he just discovered he could do it and switches back and forth!!! Is that what Mia is doing?
February 1, 2006 at 6:59 am #431AnonymousInactiveI’m on the other side here – would wait until at least 6 months if at
all possible. We tried early and it was not good – lots of cramping and
digestive issues and screaming episodes – her body was just not ready.
We’ve been off all foods now for almost 3 weeks and it will be another
3 weeks before we even try again (she’ll be 6.5 months at that point).Unless Mia is really losing weight and not eating like Matthew was, I
wouldn’t worry. What does she weigh? Is she breasfted or formula? MSPI?February 1, 2006 at 10:02 am #447AnonymousInactiveI think all babies are different. I started Isaac on solids at 4 months. We tried oatmeal which he loves first then went on to fruits and veggies. He really didn’t seem to want any of this until he was 6 months old…..so i guess we could have waited!
