We saw the Ped. GI again last Monday. He had us add a third dose of Zegerid again (so three X15mg) trying to get David’s lack of sleep under control.
It gave him diareah and didn’t help the sleep so he had us go back to two doses and added axid at night last Thursday. It didn’t help his sleep and he screamed all day Monday. I stopped the Axid (since it wasn’t helping anyway) and he’s had that reaction to medication before. The Ped GI had us go back to two doses of Zegerid and start squeeking up the amounts trying to see how much he tolerates before getting diareah.
David has screamed the rest of the week. he’s too uncomfortable to play and even the baby carrier isn’t working it’s magic.
I have him off solids since they are usually the cause of his reactions. Wednesday he got that old familiar hoarseness in his voice like he used to get before he was on Zegeried. He’s had problems nursing at times this week. His reflux has increased. He’s not sick. Dejavu! He’s acting just like he does when he isn’t on a PPI at all yet he is on more than ever.
I have a call in to the Ped. GI and will take him to his Pediatrician today just to make sure there’s not something I can’t see going on (although I hate to spend the money because I can tell he’s not sick and we are drowning in medical bills).
The funny thing is, I was just thinking on Sunday (as I was realizing that what we’d been trying was not going to help him sleep better), “Well, at least with that last bump up in amount of Zegerid he’s getting, he’s a more cheerful boy during the day. I am at least grateful for that!” So much for my cheerful boy!

December 22, 2006 at 9:56 am #20891AnonymousInactivemaybe its time for a switch to prevacid?
also, looks like he is mspi-is his diet completely milk and soy free? that can really aggrivate reflux.
December 22, 2006 at 10:20 am #20892AnonymousInactiveHe’s allergic to Prevacid and eating no solids. Just milk and soy free breastmilk. We’ve tried Elecare, Neocate, goats milk….you name it. All of which he has not tolerated.
December 22, 2006 at 11:24 am #20895AnonymousInactiveAre you using Mylanta with his Zegerid?
If so you might try using Tums instead or not use any Mylanta since it’s sometimes the Mylanta that causes so much discomfort.
In any case I think if it were me and my child I’d try the third dose of Zegerid for at least a few days to give it a chance. It does sound like he needs the higher PPI dose.
As for Prevacid, is he allergic to actual Prevacid, or was he allergic to the solutabs? If it was the solutabs he had problems with you could possibly try another form of Prevacid.
Another thought…..if the three doses of Zegerid is a no go, you could maybe try another H2 Blocker at night. Maybe he’d do better on Zantac.
It sure is a lot to sort out. I hope you get it figured out soon. You must be so tired and discouraged.
December 22, 2006 at 11:27 am #20896AnonymousInactiveoh wow I’m so sorry to hear that Kara. i wish I had some constructive advice for you, but I have many hugs and prayers.. I’m having a bit of a brain lapse right now…are there any other ppi’s besides prevacid and Zegerid that he could try? Prilosec, is that a ppi?? I hope he gets some relief somehow, and you both get some sleep!!!!! I know it’s not much help but can he tolerate zantac (mixed with a little mylanta) at night?
December 22, 2006 at 11:45 am #20898AnonymousInactivezegerid is prilosec.
i agree with chrisitne, is he allergic to ALL forms of prevacid? maybe he was allergic to an ingredient in the solutabs, because many babies cant handle them.
December 22, 2006 at 12:41 pm #20900AnonymousInactiveJust to give you some hope…I know when we started the Zantac at night, Brianna started to sleep through the night. I know I read somewhere else here that someone gives thier baby Pepcid complete (she crushes it and then administers it much like you do prevacid solutabs). Maybe one of those will work for you.
One more thing, and I am sure that you are, but are you avoiding hidden dairy too? I know the hidden also bothered Brianna.
Hugs!

December 22, 2006 at 2:37 pm #20903AnonymousInactiveThank you for your responses!
The Ped. GI called back, he thinks the increased reflux right now must be caused by something else going on. Maybe and infection that hasn’t presented itself yet or something. (The doctor didn’t find anything when we went this morning.) He perscribed Carafate (sp?). We’ll see how it goes.
I don’t know the answer about whether he was reacting to the medicine in Prevacid or a component of the solutabs. I am so tired right now and his response to it was so bad. I’m not up to gambling with making him that sick again right now. We have tried Pepsid and Zantac without success. I begin to loose hope that anything is going to work but I know that’s just the sleep deprived part of me talking and this would all look better if I could just get a nap or a few solid hours of sleep sometime!
Thanks again for your support!

December 22, 2006 at 5:28 pm #20907AnonymousInactivewe loved carafate. it really worked wonders for us in those “is it a tooth or is it reflux or something else we have no idea about but she’s waking at night” moments. its like an ahhhhhhhhh moment…
December 22, 2006 at 8:34 pm #20914AnonymousInactivesorry, I’ve always wondered but never asked, what is carafate exactly? Is it like Mylanta in that it coats their throat and soothes it (but without the annoying effects mylanta sometiems has on the tummy)?
December 22, 2006 at 9:02 pm #20918AnonymousInactiveThat is how my GI explained it…almost like baby pepto bismol…coats the throat and what not, but for Brianna, it did cause her tummy problems (well any meds in suspension do.)
Kara, maybe try the pepcid or the zantac in addition to the Zegrid..just make sure to space them four hours apart. 🙂
December 22, 2006 at 11:09 pm #20926AnonymousInactiveThe carafate will make him feel soo much better soon! We had problems with zegerid too… I think it was because it was so sweet. She has silent reflux, but on zegerid she puked everything up and she got so bad. Any way you could compound the regular prilosec and use it in combination with zantac or mylanta supreme. Give him the bigger dose before bedtime? We had tried everything too… seemed like the milk made her reflux worse! At 16 months old she is just starting to tolerate soy milk and some hidden dairy. Best of luck to your sleeping issue- I hear ya there! I hope you find the right combo for the little guy soon!
December 23, 2006 at 7:31 am #20936AnonymousInactiveNo advice!… just hugs! Hang in there.
December 23, 2006 at 10:56 pm #20970AnonymousInactiveDr. Thompson said carafate was more effective at coating GI tract than other over the counter options. He also said that not much of it gets absorbed.
My pharmacist said it has a very high aluminum content and he thought this was a concern.
Anybody else worried about that?
Kara
