I’m so happy to hear Tess is doing better.

June 6, 2006 at 11:57 am #9213AnonymousInactiveHi Karen, My PED got me an appt with a new GI for this Thursday. Michael had a great day on Sat then a horrible day on Sunday and then a good day on Monday but the night time was tough again. Since 5:00pm lastnight till 5:00am this morning (Tuesday) he did nothing but fuss during his sleep, during his feeding and while he was just hanging around. I am trying the Prevacid split routine and we will see what happens. I am going to ask the GI to try the prilosec but I will hate to try something new and have to wait for 2 weeks to see if it works, and then what if it doesn’t?!. He does very well on the pepsid so I will keep that one. Yesterday I finally got him in the car seat and I went to my sisters. This is the first time we’ve been out of the house since 2 weeks ago. Sometimes it looks like he is doing better and then we have a bad day.
Overall it looks like I am leaning toward the finish line because he wasn’t even getting in the car/seat for a while. Maybe something is working or he is on the down slope of this whole thing.
He is gaining weight like crazy. He put on 5 lbs in 6 weeks. I am very happy about that but now he is getting a little heavy to be carrying around all day. But I will do anything for him now.
I’ll keep ya posted.
Thank you for your concern. Hope Tess continues to do well.

Let us know how the GI appt goes tomorrow. You don’t have to jump to the Prilosec right away. You can give the split dose of the Prevacid a little more time to work. It’s just nice to have the script for the Prilosec handy in case you want to try it – then you don’t have to wait for the doc to call it in. Once the meds are right you won’t have those “bad” days. Don’t get me wrong… it’s not like every day is paradise! LOL! But the squirming, not sleeping well, all-day fussiness should be gone. I’m starting to think that Tess needs her dosage upped. If you can believe our bathroom scale she’s up to 17lbs now! Of course, I’d love to think that the scale is reading high (especially when I step on it ) but regardless I know she’s gained at least 3lbs since her script was written. I have a call in to the GI to see if he’ll agree to increase her. It could be that she’s teething or something else but my gut says her increased fussiness is reflux related. I figure we can try more meds and if it doesn’t help then I can go back to the old dose and blame it on teething.
Good luck tomorrow!

He told me to stop the PPI and just stay on the Pepsid. Michael is growing rapidly so he thinks that this is causing a lot of his issues. I am going to give him the Pepsid only and give him a week of observation. Today he did good (Friday). The doctor said that he should be growing out of this within the next few weeks. The only thing with Michael is that he squirms alot only when he is sleeping in on his own and during the day. At night he sleeps in his bassinet alone. Sometimes he squirms and sometimes he doesn’t. He is so unpredictable. I will see what happens. The GI told me to call him within the next 2 weeks to give him an update.
We’ll see.

The GI told you Michael would be growing out of the reflux in the next few weeks? Or was he talking about the colic? I have never heard of a doctor making such a bold statement. Believe me when I say I’m not trying to be unsupportive or anything like that but I really wouldn’t hold your breath. First of all, I hate the whole “colic” thing. This is what doctor’s tell you when they don’t know why your kid cries a lot and they can’t be bothered to try to figure it out. Sure, sometimes it’s just their little personality but sometimes there are real issues causing them to be unhappy – allergies, gas, reflux, etc. My first DD was “colicky”. I was told she would out grow it by the time she was 3 months old. She didn’t. Then I was told some babies don’t get over it until they are four months. Her four month birthday came and went and she was still extremely fussy. Then five months. Then six months. It turns out that my DD is a high-needs (or spirited) child. It’s just a part of her temperment and while she has improved with age she will probably always be high-needs. I got so horribly depressed each time another month went by and she wasn’t miraculously “better”, her “colic” didn’t disappear. Michael may well have colic that will go away as he gets older but just know that no one, not even a doctor, can tell you exactly when that will be.
As for the medications, if the Pepsid isn’t cutting it after a week I would definitely push to try Prilosec. We are living proof that not all PPI’s work the same on every kid. The Prevacid didn’t do much of anything for Tess but the Prilosec seems to be working great. Hopefully you won’t need it but don’t be afraid to push for trying something else if Michael still seems like he’s suffering.
Keep me posted.
Karen
