September 10, 2007 at 2:27 pm #42418AnonymousInactiveMy DS Luke had his well-baby checkup today and got a few shots. I was glad he had an appmt. b/c the past few days have been bad. I had several concerns I wanted to chat with his Dr. about. The Dr. is usually the nice one I like to see b/c he takes his time. WELL, so I had about a 100 questions to go over with him today. I had even been keeping a journal the past few days, detailing how Luke was doing, when he had an episode….the whole 9 yards. The Dr. was SO rushed! I barely got to ask him anything, b/c he was just going so fast! I mean, I really had some concerns, and he acted like he was in a hurry, and brushed me off…said it was mostly colic now and he’d grow out of it!!!!! I’m sorry, but I can tell the difference between reflux and colic. Chloe my DD had colic, and she NEVER EVER acted like Luke does. Tell me you wouldn’t have been upset?!!! Try having a screaming in pain baby (of course Luke was fine while he was there), and then a Dr. who is too busy to help…..????? I mean, he even told me that I should give him fruit to help with constipation. HELLO??? He’s 2 months old! He seemed to think b/c he was growing, and gaining weight, that he was fine.I like this Dr. usually. He is one of the more sympathetic ones in this practice. I just don’t know what to make of today. I feel so frustrated b/c I have NO more answers than I did yesterday. He didn’t even ask about how his meds were working!!! Didn’t even want to up them any, and told me NO on giving him Mylanta for episodes. I WANT MY BABY TO FEEL BETTER!!!! I am SICK of having a hurting, grumpy, miserable baby!!!!!!!Thanks, I really really needed to vent that bad!!!! I’m super frustrated today!Kelly
Urgh!!! SO mad today! Makes me feel like I am no where closer than I was yesterday
September 10, 2007 at 2:40 pm #42419AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry for what y’all are going through. It is so hard to watch your baby suffer. I have switched ped’s twice and finally found one that I really like. Even when she is busy, if she sees I have concerns, she sits down and talks everything over with me.
Try calling his doctor and telling him that you felt rushed today, and had a lot you needed to talk about. If he is willing to talk to you, then maybe he was just having a bad day. If he isn’t willing to talk, then maybe it’s time to look around for a doctor who is willing to talk. Hope things get better!CherieSeptember 10, 2007 at 5:55 pm #42422AnonymousInactiveI like Cherie’s advice. It sounds like maybe it was just a bad day since you’ve liked him previously. There is nothing more frustrating than a doctor who is rushed and/or CLUELESS about reflux!!! If you feel comfortable, maybe call him, fax him, or email him, etc…and explain that you have several more questions. See what kind of response you get from that. Is it easy to find a new doctor if you decide this one isn’t going to work? I know some smaller towns leave few options…
September 10, 2007 at 6:47 pm #42425AnonymousInactiveI will add one more thing. Remember he is your baby and you don’t need permission from the dr. to do mylanta or up the meds yourself. I will say though that if you are going to up the meds yourself that you check marci-kids first for the correct dosing. I hope things are better soon.
September 10, 2007 at 6:49 pm #42426AnonymousInactiveIf you want to up his meds yourself, ask your pharmacist what the biggest dose he can have at his age and weight. They will gladly figure it out for you. I’ve done this before and the doctors were always fine with it.
CherieSeptember 10, 2007 at 7:03 pm #42427AnonymousInactivei agree with shelby. you are the parent, not him.
September 10, 2007 at 8:07 pm #42428hellbenntKeymasterFAX your doctor. FAX your requests. TELL don’t ask…
make it short & sweet. THANK dr . no feelings. baby’s weight, current meds, dose, symptoms. request higher dose. marci-kids info. THANK AGAIN. call office to follow up.FAX FAX FAXSeptember 10, 2007 at 9:34 pm #42433AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies! I do think it must have been an off day for the Dr…I usually like him a lot. Now I’m dealing with a feverish baby b/c of the shots. I can’t win today! If it’s not one thing it’s another! As soon as he’s feeling better (right…), I’m going to deal with the Dr. If he’s still feeling bad in a day or two, I’m going to make another appmt!!! I pay THEM dang it! I’ll go again if I want to!
I don’t think they take this as seriously as us parents do. THEY don’t have to live with these poor hurting babies at 2:00am! Will check out Marci-Kids in the meantime! Thanks for letting me vent!!!!KellySeptember 11, 2007 at 9:22 am #42455AnonymousInactiveAnother option is to contact Dr. Phillips from marci-kids and to ask him to call your ped and talk to him. Several people have done this and their docs have agreed to up the dose.
If you like your doc, then I’d stick with him. (Maybe just slip him some reading material on the side about the difference between colic and reflux.) My ped is also great, but kept telling me that Hailey would outgrow it. I didn’t want to leave him b/c he’s great in other respects, so I asked for a referral to a ped GI. We eventually found someone who would up our dose of meds. The others are right in that you don’t technically need permission to up a dose on your own… people can do whatever they want. But in the long term, it’s best to have a doctor who’s on board with you in terms of values and treatment, so that you don’t have to keep making excuses and being untruthful about what happened to the extra meds, and if you ever have to disclose how much medication you’re giving to other specialists etc.
The other thing is that I noticed that you’re on prilosec. If it’s a compound, I’d wonder if it’s being made correctly (NO flavourings whatsoever and as per the marci-kids specs. You might want to get a printout of what they’re putting into it.) If you’re using prilosec, you might want to try zegerid. I’ve never used it myself, but others have used it with success- it’s like prilosec, the same med, but a stable compound.
Good luck. Hopefully if you catch your doc on a better day he’ll be more receptive. I hope that things improve for you soon.

September 11, 2007 at 11:07 am #42459AnonymousInactiveThere’s nothing more frustrating as a parent than a doctor who won’t sit and listen to you and help you work through problems. Like others have said he may have just been having an off day, but if he continues to give you problems I think it would be worth looking for yet another doctor. Your doctor is someone who you’ll be taking your kids to all through their childhood, so you definitely want someone who you can trust to be on the same page as you and listen to you as the mom and help you! I went through a few doctors before I settled on our current one. She’s awesome! She makes sure all of my questions are answered before we leave. She answers my e-mails. She’ll even discuss questions about my other kids even if the appointment isn’t for them. She always asks us how we all are doing and asks about my husbands business. (she’s a family practice doctor) When I had my second son, we didn’t make it to the hospital I was supposed to give birth at, and ended up having him in the car. We ended up in a different hospital that was closer to home. My doctor drove all the way to this other hospital (in her free time!!) just to see how we were doing. I was impressed. THIS is the kind of doctor I want to take my kids to throughout their childhood and to take care of my family.
Anyway, my point is, it’s definitely worth looking until you find the right doctor for your family. Hopefully you’ve already found him and he was just having an off day. Good luck! I hope that you can get Luke on the right med/ dose soon and he gets feeling better.
September 12, 2007 at 4:47 am #42500AnonymousInactiveI agree with Heather. A good ped is an invaluable thing. If you want to shop around, maybe someone on this site can recommend a good doc. Going through reflux with a good doc on board can make all the difference. Good luck.
