December 9, 2008 at 2:21 pm #59387AnonymousInactiveI am so confused about MSPI does this sound like it?Since about a week old Grant has had nasy BM’s with mucus but I was told that it’s normal for a breastfed baby. He was very restless at night but has since gotten better and actually sleeps. DUring the day he sleeps better in his carseat. He sleeps well at night and rarely cries however, he grunts and struggles on the breast and the bottle, has explosive bright green mucusy bm’s at almost every feed( sometimes 4 w/in 45 mins), wheezy, diaper rash, wet burps, hiccups and spits up. He has been on soy for 24 hours and he seems more uncomfortable and spits up more. I am not sure what to do should I wait out the soy, ask for his stool to be tested, go straight to the hypo formula- I’m just at a loss. The fact that he isn’t miserable is throwing me and making me think I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill. But, feeding him is not this clam enjoyable experience so I know something isn’t right well that and the poop factor. What should be my first step? I’m trying to read through all the posts but I don’t have that many hours 🙂December 9, 2008 at 2:27 pm #59388AnonymousInactive
One more thing from day one his tummy and intestines have mad awful noises while eating.

Are you wanting to continue bf’ing? If so I would consider a the TED (total elimination diet). There is great info on this forum but I can also give you ideas as I’ve been on it for a while.
If you want to make a switch to formula I would start w/ Alimentum or Nutramigen – see how he does for 2 wks, then if still miserable make a transition to Neocate @ that point.
Hang in there…
December 9, 2008 at 3:48 pm #59392AnonymousInactiveditto to what Erin said.
The diapers are probably the best sign that there is some type of intolerance going on. And as I am sure you have heard many babies that can’t do milk have just as hard a time with soy. That was our case and once we were on Nutramigen and a good dose of prevacid things started to turn around. It did take us about 6wks on Nutramigen to see a change but that also went along with us starting prevacid and adjusting his dose… probably would have been sooner if the prevacid dose has bee high enough to start with. HTH.
December 9, 2008 at 4:13 pm #59397AnonymousInactivenot to disagree TOO much, but in the days that we used cloth diapers all the time, (oooo, that makes me sound old!LOL!) most poopy diapers in a breastfed baby were explosive and were often preceded by alot of squirming and grunting. and, 4 poops after a feeding isn’t unusual, either. a poopy diaper quite often would involve not just a diaper change, but a change of plastic pants, a change of clothes, a change of bedding, and sometimes a change of my own clothes!!
when he is feeding and squirming—-if he happens to have a bm, does he settle down and eat better?
the wheezy part seems the most concerning to me. is it in his throat mostly, or do you think he is aspirating?
gotta run—i’ll be back!
December 9, 2008 at 7:19 pm #59408AnonymousInactiveHe doesn’t settle after his BM and his feeds are stressful 🙁 Tho they have been worse today and I wonder if it’s they soy since he’s been on soy 24 hours now. I’m giving it a week to see if I see a change and then I’ll see what we are going to do. He used to eat 3 1/2 ozs on similac advance but with they Isomil he’s only eating 2 ozs every 3 -4 hours. His weight is slightly off – only by a few ozs so I’m not really concerned there. I just want to have an enjoyable time feeding my son.
December 9, 2008 at 8:31 pm #59410AnonymousInactivei had to quit nursing my 3rd child at 2 weeks and i put him on soy. i never thought his bm’s looked right, but i don’t think i ever mentioned it to the doc. looking back, i’ll bet that he had a problem with soy and i just didn’t realize it. his diapers were very dark green and almost like diarreah (SP?) all the time. wish i had known then what i know now.
feeding shouldn’t be stressful. good luck on this gerd journey that we all wish we didn’t have to take! -
