This just plain sucks…..We had our first appt. with the pg Tuesday, she switched us from 15 mg Prevacid once a day to 7.5 twice a day and gave us the solutabs (so much easier!!!). It’s been downhill ever since. Evan will not sleep (he was up for 12 hours straight the other day, working on 8 right now). He cries every time we try to rock him to sleep, finally becomes so exhausted he falls asleep and then wakes up within 10-15 minutes. We’ve tried everything, even driving around for hours, nothing works. Eventually (at night) he becomes so exhausted he goes to sleep. Whne he falls asleep for the night, his sleep is pretty normal for him, but when he does wake mid-evening, he take much longer than normal to get back to sleep. He’s never been a great sleeper, but never this bad, and things were starting to get better the two weeks prior to this. The pg said he was right on the line to get the next dose up and she would consider it if we thought this wasn’t working but to wait until Monday at least. The problem is that I don’t know if it’s the reflux causing the sleep problems or if it’s unrelated and I don’t want to over-medicate him. Help??
July 4, 2008 at 11:25 pm #53420AnonymousInactiveAccording to the marci-kids.com research, it would take a LOT more than even they recommend to over medicate with a PPI. Medicines like prevacid and zegerid ONLY target the acid producing cells in the body and don’t effect any other organs or systems. I understand the struggle about giving ANY baby medicine, but if your child has reflux the damage from NOT medicating can be much worse!
It does sound like he needs a higher dose. He still sounds like he’s pretty miserable. Poor lil guy!! Are you making sure to give the dose 30-60 minutes before a meal? I hope that when you talk to the doctor on Monday they will be willing to increase his dose and help get him some relief. Are there any signs of MSPI? Mucously diapers, excema, rashes, etc? It could also be that he is reacting to the milk and soy proteins in your breastmilk. TED might be an option to consider if even a higher dose of prevacid doesn’t seem to be working. My daughter had a mild case of MSPI (never had the mucous, rashes, etc…just screamed and cried) It took switching her to Alimentum before we saw complete relief.Good luck and hang in there! I vividly remember those early days and how difficult they were. Stay on top of his treatment and don’t stop fighting until he’s a HAPPY baby!July 5, 2008 at 9:02 am #53421AnonymousInactiveHe’s had mucousy diapers a few times, but that’s it. And he had a rash but the Dr. said it was a mixture of seborhea and heat rash (I treated it with excema cream and it went away!)
I’m going to call Monday and ask them to up the dose. I’ve noticed that he’s clearing his throat a lot, and that was clearing up before we changed the dose. He actually seemed to be doing better taking one dose of 15 mg in the morning, then he is now. Maybe we had just gotten used to having bad evenings and now it’s bad all day. Can’t wait for Monday!July 5, 2008 at 12:39 pm #53422hellbenntKeymastermaybe 15mgs 2x a day would do the trick? hmm….
July 5, 2008 at 1:15 pm #53424AnonymousInactiveHe was really in pain this morning after feeding, wheezing and arching so we called the on-call Dr at our pg office (not our pg!)and he was no help, refused to up the meds. So we called our pediatrician and she upped them to 15mg twice a day, said she was very comfortable doing that as that is the typical dose our pg gives…..hope this works, it fits with the dosing recommended on marci-kids.

You can always use mylatna for breakthrough pain. The pharmacist can give you the dose and times per day. You have to let him/her know you are on a PPI because you have to spread out the dosages of the PPI and mylanta or the PPI can become ineffective. So be careful…..July 5, 2008 at 10:25 pm #53431AnonymousInactiveThanks for the advice, it’s nice to know there’s a place to get answers!
Jessica-My pg recommended Maalox, I wonder if it has the same effect as Mylanta on a PPI? -
