Thanks, Leanne. A cesspool of germs, hugh? Yikes. I always worried about that but never asked my doctor about it. I figured she already knows I’m a paranoid nut, so why add to it? But that really is gross. And babies tend to swallow the water which can’t be good. You have to watch for foot diseases, too. People run around bare foot. I make my kids wear water shoes wheneer we go to any public pools (which is rare).
I love the pictures. He sure loved his little baby boat! Makes me want to go to sleep looking at him floating around like that.
November 2, 2006 at 4:22 pm #17092AnonymousInactiveHee hee… Just watch one episode of Dateline where they are telling you how many germs there are in places and you will FREAK! After a while I think I have to just put blinders on otherwise we would be living in a bubble.
Yeah, I suppose Max not only gummed everything in sight in the pool but also swallowed some.
He was really cute in his baby boat. The last 2 summer’s haven’t been as fun… he hasn’t been into the lake much. Earlier this year he wanted to go on the Jet Ski with dh so he idled with him on the seat with him… Then Dad thought it would be funny to give it a little gas and that was it. Max was afraid of it the rest of the summer. Hopefully next year.

Now about, little swimmers… what do you mean they only contain poop? (sorry if I sound stupid.) I thought that they were supposed to hold both in. YUCK!
November 2, 2006 at 4:48 pm #17096AnonymousInactiveYeah, I thought they (swim diapers) were supposed to hold in both, too. Even if they did it wouldn’t matter much because at every pool I’ve been to, some people bring their babies in without swim diapers and nobody says anything to them. I’ve also seen people with hideous rashes, and again, nobody says anthing. It makes me so mad.
Lori, about the nutra sweet, I read it turns into methyl alcohol when it’s broken down in the body. Methyl alcohol can cause blindness. I read a book about nutrasweet. It really was a big consiparacy that it was ever approved by the FDA. It’s a nasty substance that should be banned.
November 2, 2006 at 6:04 pm #17100AnonymousInactiveThere is sure a lot of scary stuff out there isn’t there? It’s hard to know what to believe now days. It’s hard &
sometimes scary to be a parent & make wise decisions concerning
your children.November 2, 2006 at 6:48 pm #17105AnonymousInactiveahh swim diapers, I realized the issue with those when Austin was little and I dressed him in a swim diaper (forgot a real one) after swiming, thinking it would be the same as the other..oops, he peed all over me! Hence the “non-absorbant” thing (I let my husband figure this out himself with Aidan at the pool this year and it was hysterical!!).
November 2, 2006 at 8:31 pm #17111AnonymousInactiveAs others have said, the flu shot is definitely your own personal decision. However, I was on an immuno-suppressive drug for years before getting pregnant. I got the flu shot every year and never had a problem with the flu. There were two years when I forgot to get the shot. Both years I got the flu, so I’m a firm believer in getting the shot. Plus, last year, Kaelyn had the shot and was one of the only kids at her daycare to avoid a major flu outbreak that swept through the center (and she caught every other virus that went through – I had used almost all of my sick days before I even had to go on bedrest with Alex).
I just have to address the pool issue. I worked around pools for years. If a pool is adequately chlorinated then the water itself shouldn’t be an issue (as long as nothing escapes a diaper and ends up “floating” in the water). Urine is actually sterile for quite a while after it leaves your body. That’s why they say you can drink it if you’re stranded somewhere without water(gross, but true). It’s the pool facilities that you have to watch out for. The exposed walls of pools can be germ factories and most gym/pool showers are pretty nasty.
November 2, 2006 at 10:54 pm #17124AnonymousInactiveThank you to everyone for your input on this post. DH and I have decided to go ahead and get the flu shot for her. I definitely don’t want her to get sick in the first place…but neither one of us has an abundance of sick days to stay home with her if she did get sick. I do realize the flu shot isn’t a guaruntee of staying healthy, but it’s a little something that I can do to try to prevent it!!!
THANKS!!!

That having been said, my twin 9 month old boys and I just got over a nasty week-long stomach flu that was TERRIBLE (we thought our reflux babies puked a lot when they were healthy – egads!).

there are people that die from the flu all the time. thousands of people are hospitilized from the flu every year. this occurs in people with compromised immune systems, the elderly, preemies, etc,
that said, i am still not getting it for my son.
nataliachick72006-11-3 13:47:50November 3, 2006 at 1:48 pm #17150AnonymousInactiveYou most certainly can die from the flu. Your pediatrician is wrong…. Young children and the elderly are the most at risk. It isn’t common, but it does happen every year…..
November 3, 2006 at 2:08 pm #17152AnonymousInactiveAlexis and Taylor had their flu shots yesterday along with Tay’s 6 month shots and both girls seem to be doing fine! They both had a 2 1/2 hour nap after we came home from the MD’s office which was very nice! So far so good!
November 3, 2006 at 3:04 pm #17154AnonymousInactiveohh good, I’m glad everything went well, we’re still waiting for the shots to arrive here, no one has them. Everyone has the mist BUT no one wants it because the shot is the “dead” virus and the mist is the “live” virus. But if the shots don’t arrive next week, I’m going to go with the mist for my oldest (not for under 5 I don’t think) because his lungs are already protesting winter!!
November 3, 2006 at 5:02 pm #17163AnonymousInactiveI can’t believe any pediatrician would say that you can’t die from the flu.
November 5, 2006 at 4:48 pm #17231AnonymousInactiveWell, here are my thoughts on the flu. Since coming to this town for college, I have had the flu every year except last year, when I got the flu shot. Needless to say, I got my shot last week, and Aidan is getting her’s on Tuesday.
