Got the neocate today and started the slow switch…tried it alone, but he totally rejected it, as predicted. Poor little guy – it stinks!
Also, he choked on the little bit I tried giving him alone, so I ordered some Simply Thick….has anyone ever had trouble with this product (in terms of bad reactions). Just wanted to check!
Thanks,
Johanna
November 13, 2006 at 3:19 pm #17891AnonymousInactiveWatch for runny poops but that is about the only side effect I have heard of. I know for a fact that Thick-It does cause runny poo’s but I am not sure about Simply Thick.
November 13, 2006 at 4:36 pm #17898AnonymousInactiveyou can also consider beechnut rice cereal.
its better to introduce the formula slowly, mix it in with the old formula slowly.November 13, 2006 at 5:56 pm #17904AnonymousInactiveRight now, i do not think that there are many moms around here that are on Simply Thick but at one point, maybe a year or a year and a half ago there were tons!
Runny poops could be one possibility but cannot remember any pthers – if you do a search you will find out a lto i am sure.
November 13, 2006 at 7:44 pm #17914AnonymousInactivethanks for the advice everyone! i ordered some of the simply thick because he did so poorly when we added rice to his bottles last time!
and – let me ask you this – i am starting him on the neocate slowly. i am adding only one ounce in five in his bottles…and he seems so much worse tonight! is that because it is so thin? he even spit up a little bit (and he never does, as he is a silent refluxer) AND choked while eating the bottle (also never happened before)! i am assuming all of this will get better with the thickener???? PLEASE SAY YES!!!
November 13, 2006 at 7:57 pm #17916AnonymousInactiveIt maybe the since the neocate is so thin, or the taste. We did use Simply thick when Taylor was on neocate and she actually did fine on it, no runny poops, but she has issues with BMs. The reason for the runny poops is the Simply thick acts as a Fiber according to our dietician, she stays they use Simply thick on a lot of babies in the NICU to help with bowel movements. We used the nectar consistency and she did fine on it. Too bad she was allergic to the corn syrup in the neocate so it didn’t last long.
November 13, 2006 at 7:59 pm #17917AnonymousInactiveSo what in the world did you feed your little one when the neocate didn’t work??? How did you find out he/she was allergic to corn syrup???
November 13, 2006 at 8:13 pm #17920AnonymousInactiveWe kept on trying different formulas. We definitely knew she could not tolerate the milk based since that was what she was given at the hospital and she did horrible on it. We found out she was allergic to corn starch since I tried to thicken her formula with thick it which is modifed corn starch and she was in so much pain and vomiting. She did horrible with neocate and we didn’t know why we thought it was just because of the long chain fats, so we made other switches to pregestimal, nutramigen, powdered alimentum, all of which she did horrible with due to the corn in it and milk. We finally switched to RTF alimentum without corn but she still did horrible due to the processed milk. Finally I put things together and figured out everything has one thing in common corn syrup. We actually switched her to goats milk for awhile she did the best but still not good due to the milk based. The Peds Md got her allergy tested and it showed allergic reactions to milk, corn, and corn syrup (which many find strange since it does not contain any proteins but it did show up as positive reaction). So talking with the dietician she is on Ross Carbohydrate Free soy based without corn you add your own carbohydrate which we all Brown rice syrup. She is actually on 1/2 goats milk and 1/2 RCF the dietician thinks she doing okay on it even though it is milk is because it is only partly milk not 100% like the rest of the formulas. She won’t switch completely to soy, most likely due to the taste. The RCF is a formula is mostly used for tube fed babies with metabolic disorders. This is formula #10 for her, so far so good.

November 13, 2006 at 8:52 pm #17930AnonymousInactiveJust wondering what teat size you are using? I know with the pepti-junior which is also very thin, I had to go back to newborn teats for awhile- it just flowed to quickly otherwise and I had a lot of choking. After a couple of weeks, after she got used to the consistency I went back to a more standard teat. She occasionally still chokes a little- when she is ravenously hungry- but I guess she gets lots of practice of her gag reflex!!
I have also found Alana reacts a bit to Karicare thickener- which is also corn syrup based- sounds like the thick it. I get much more moaning and groaning when I try to thicken her formula. They don’t recommend rice cereal in Aus, because most brands have a thickened formula. But because there are no options with Pepti Junior, I tried rice cereal once but she got mucous in her stools- the first time ever. So I just persist with the Pepti Junior as is. Alana adjusted but she was a bit younger at the time. This next statement will probably open up a hornets nest, but I never quite got the whole idea of thickening with rice cereal so young, when it is really a solid and babies aren’t ready to digest solids until at least 4-6months. So after this one attempt I gave up.
In saying that Alana has always been a refluxer who overfeeds- apparently some do because the milk actually soothes the oesephagus (?sp). This may have been why the transition to a thinner feed worked. Whilst she was prem, she is now consistently at 75% in terms of weight- but then that could be genetic!!!

Therese – I thought about the nipple size. I may try switching to a slower flow before I try the Simply Thick. Thank you for the suggestion.
