My son has always had silent reflux. He used to throw up when he was on breast milk, and on the soy formula, but he almost never spit up in the past. Last week he started spitting up and he is now doing it a lot. Is it normal for them to start spitting up as they get older?
He has recently started solids, but he was eating the oatmeal for about 3 weeks and the carrots for over a week before the spitting up started. When he ate sweet potatoes (10 days ago) he spit up several times and did not poop for two days so for now I am just sticking to the oatmeal and carrots. Is it possible for a reaction to be that delayed? He LOVES to eat so I really don’t want to take it away from him. He is still acting the same and dose not seem to be in pain when he spits up, just a little startled by it.
Has anyone else had a silent refluxer start spitting?

My son who has reflux (not silent) lately has gone almost two weeks with no throwing up and then all of a sudden will throw up four times a day for several days. I’ve really thought about it, but don’t see any connection with what he’s eating. It seems more related to him having a cold or teething.
If Sebastian is enjoying his solids, I’d keep giving them to him unless you see a direct correlation with a certain food.
Myles gets a little constipated with sweet potatoes, too. But he loves them so I always give him pears later in the day if he had sweet potatoes. The pears seem to help a lot with him moving his bowels. Has Sebastian had any fruit yet? I’ve read that pears are easier on the tummy than apples so I started Myles on pears and he does great with them.
Oh, that reminds me, I have noticed that when Myles is a little constipated, he does throw up more…maybe having all that poop hanging around in the bowel puts pressure on his tummy or something. So, maybe introduce little Sebastian to some pears and if he handles them well for a week, then try sweet potatoes again and give pears with them. That works very well for my little guy
I love the name Sebastian..so cute

I never thought I would be the kind of mom that worried about every little thing. I have worked in child care and as a nanny sense I was 15. I thought I was prepared for anything and then along came MSPI and Reflux and now I am second guessing my every move! I guess nothing can ever truly prepare you for having your own child.
I was holding of on fruit but it probably would not hurt to try the pears. He is so excited about eating he must be getting sick of carrots and oatmeal by now
Thanks, I have loved the name sense I was a little kid. My dad made him wooden letters for his wall. I just put then up and his name is as long as his crib. It’s a big name, but I still love it.
April 30, 2006 at 8:33 pm #7260AnonymousInactiveI worked as a nanny and in child care since age 15, too!! So, I was surprised to see how neurotic I would be with my own. It’s just different when they are your own and you are 100% responsibility for their saftey and well being. I worry a lot more than I thought I would. I also thought by the time I got to the third I’d have it all figured out and not worry as much, but I worry about him as much as I worried about the first two. The experience does help, though.
I picked Liza’s name when I was 13 years old, hoping I’d be able to convince the man I’d marry that it was the most beautiful little girl name in the world! Fortunately, my husband liked the name (didn’t love it), but liked it enough to let me name her Liza.
I hope he likes the pears. Myles loves them. I forgot to mention in my last post that once Myles was eating a bigger variety of foods, the sweet potatoes no longer constipate him. In the beginning he’d get them for five days in a row, and nothing else, so I think that’s why they would bind him up. Now he gets carrots for a day or two, sweet potatoes for a day or two, squash for a day or two, and pears or apples most days, too. I think if we ate sweet potatoes for a week straight we’d probably get backed up, too!!

(Didn’t think I’d be going through this AGAIN!! PS- I’m a speech therapist w/ a background in feeding disorders!!) we just had the baby to the GI and he said that for some infants who are silent refluxers, spitting can actual start b/n 4-6 mos of age-so I shouldn’t be alarmed if that happens. (Easier said than done.) Hang in there- You are not alone.
Denise
Madison- 4 y/o (rlfux with projectile vomitting); TJ 20 mos- no issues other than terrible 2s; Mackenzie- 9 weeks- silent reflux, pepsid, Good Start (for now) – no ARA/DHA
