Emma does not spit up. Only when she is laid flat on her back immediately after a feeding, if she cries really hard after a feeding, or if she over eats. HOWEVER…she does choke/cough a LOT. Is this possibly because she has ‘silent reflux’ where the spit up is coming partially up and she chokes when she swallows it back down??? She doesn’t cry every time this happens but she usually makes a pretty awful face (as I can imagine the acid tastes nasty)
Sarah was a big spitter so I never had this problem with her. Emma seems to choke all the time and I’m so paranoid that she’s going to aspirate some of her formula!!!Any ideas? Also…Emma has a NASTY NASTY NASTY diaper rash. I feel awful for her when I look at it! Sarah got a nasty diaper rash when we first started her on alimentum so I figured that’s what it must be…but I can’t get it to go away! I put diaper cream on her at every diaper change and I give her time to dry out between diapers too. Any other ideas?? She is in serious pain!December 10, 2009 at 10:24 am #65032AnonymousInactiveMy Lo id the same thing until we found a good medication (Zegerid) and put him in added rice starch formula. This has cut all of that down to almost nothing. I also change his diaper before he eats and if he soils diaper while eating or shortly after, if he is wake, I will wait 20 minutes before I change him, but whether he is asleep or not I elevate him on his changing table as much as I can and still be able to change his diaper. I also keep a loaded syringe of mylanta ready to when it happens, I can give it to him and it calms down the episode really quick. He will swallow and the terrible face goes away.
As far as the rash…. Have you tried a medicated cream? I know there are some over the counter. You can also try Aquaphor or a cream with zinc oxide in it.
You also might want to think if it is related to the type of diaper or wipes you use that is causing it. You may also want to call your pedi and see if there is a cream they can prescribe, sometimes it can be caused by yeast.ImHis2009-12-10 10:25:11

Have you tried putting some of the mylanta on a cotton ball and “dabbing” her bottom with it? It helped Cooper recently with a bad one. And when Cooper was 4 months old he had his 1 and only really really bad one and what I would do was when i changed his diaper was I would lay him on his tummy and let him “play” while I took a hair dryer set on cool and just blew cool air on him for about 5 mins to help dry things up. Another thing the ped told me was the fewer baths the better, don’t know how often you are bathing her right now. HTH.
December 10, 2009 at 2:55 pm #65036AnonymousInactiveI forgot about the mylanta trick! I just tried it last diaper change…hopefully it’ll help! Something that didn’t occur to me until you mentioned it…I have been giving 1ml of mylanta before every bottle. I wonder if that is what is causing her irritating poos?? They are pea green and watery (sorta like the consistency of stage 1 baby food). Maybe I’m giving too much? I remember that diarrhea is the sign you gave too much mylanta…hmm…
If I am able to get insurance to cover my alimentum, I’m tempted to switch to the RTF b/c I know it’s thicker so it might help with the choking. I hate to have to add anything to her bottles. I go see the doctor tomorrow so hopefully I’ll get some help! I’m also going to push for zegerid too while I’m there…fingers crossed!December 10, 2009 at 9:07 pm #65044AnonymousInactiveMylanta can give water poops. I think up to 5ml’s a day is OK… but that is in a 24 hour period. Maybe try backing off a few and see if that helps. I only give the mylanta to Connor when he needs it now because they Zegerid works well. I do hope your doctor will prescribe it. It is prilosec just in powder form and doses for babies.
