Silent Reflux anyone?

I am wondering if anyone else has a child with silent reflux. We have been around the block with trying to diagnose it and I wanted to compare notes.

My son has/had it from birth. He RARELY spits up. I can hear it come up & he gulps it back down. This also coincides w/ back arching, red face, etc (when he was not medicated). When he was very young he cried & cried unless he was sleeping or nursing (the breastmilk acted as a natural antacid).

He also has/had intolerances so what he was refluxing was a VERY thick mucous (so much that it landed us in the ER to suck it out). He had labored breathing too.

ETA: I’m sure I”m forgetting other symptoms as well, but these come to mind.erinntx2009-04-20 15:23:08

shrieking/howling nonstop

you could hear a GLERP sound in his belly-like an internal hiccup

he also had what is called Sandifer’s Symproms- he would arch his back (very severely) and turn so red it was almost purple- he did this at all times- nothing to do w/ eating. he would TRY to sleep and then I’d see him arching and turning red and it would wake him up and he’d howl…

he had torctilitus (cannot spell!) which can be a Sandifer’s symptom- twisting his head to one side- he would also stiffen up when doing this and stick out the opposite leg, very stiff & straight….

his diapers were normal ‘breastfed’ baby diapers…

he was breastfed and wanted to nurse constantly- called comfort-feeding. oftentimes when babies like him are gaining weight, drs tell you that they’re fine- we knew he WASN’T fine bcse he showed his reflux in the hospital after birth and wound up in the NICU…

Yup I have heard the sounds of it coming up and her trying to swallow it back down. I don’t really hear that now she is on her meds. Do you know if missing a dose will make them feel the pain? Last night we gave her a dose and she spit probably 30% of it out, she hates the taste of it. And today she cried for about 2 hours, the same painful cry as before…
