shane has a cold and cough of some type, and is throwing up pretty much every bottle he has had, i dont think its a stomach virus, because at the end up the bottle or half way inbetween he kinda gags and the whole entire bottle comes projecting out , its been like this since last night. what would you guys do? call the doc yet? has this ever happened to you guys from them just being congested?
December 16, 2006 at 4:25 pm #20595AnonymousInactiveHi Lauren,
Sorry to hear Shane is sick.. When Bryce is congested at all, he spits up tons more. I think it’s just from all the mucous draining down their throats. It makes them gag more and can also upset their tummies. I know a lot of times Bryce will just gag out of the blue. When Bryce coughs it makes him spit up more times than not too.I hope he gets feeling better soon! It’s just miserable to be sick with reflux on top of it.
December 16, 2006 at 7:25 pm #20596AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry!! Babies being sick is the worst!! Sarah has never had that happen to her…however, my best friends little girl went through the same thing. Her pediatrician said that babies that little don’t have the muscle control to cough without losing their stomach contents. So I would say the throwing up is because of the coughing and gagging and not because of anything else.
I would use your judgement to call the doctor. The worst they can say is there is nothing they can do (but then you have peace of mind about at least going) or they can give him something to help the congestion.
Are you giving him anything OTC for it? Benadryl or anything? I never thought I’d be so medicine driven with my child…but I’ll do just about anything to make her feel better!!!
Hope Shane feels better soon! Keep us posted!
AmyDecember 16, 2006 at 8:29 pm #20597AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear Shane is sick.
I agree with Amy. It may be the couging that is causing him to gag and throw up. I’ve seen this with my children. Also, when Myles was sick a week ago with a stomach bug he had projectile vomitting for the first two days.
If he has both respiratory and digestive issues it could be the flu….but I hope and pray it’s not.
I’d call the doctor tomorrow just to be on the safe side because he’s so young. I hope it’s just a cold and cough and will clear up soon.
December 16, 2006 at 9:32 pm #20598AnonymousInactivethanks guys.. i think it is the gagging as well.. but he doesnt really want a bottle all night.. i think i got like an ounce in him 🙁 and he wont drink the pedialyte…
how long can they go w/o drinking anything? ??
i will probably call the doc tomorrow….
December 17, 2006 at 8:07 am #20599AnonymousInactiveI would probably call the doctor to be on the safe side. Sarah went two days last week where she was only drinking maybe 10oz a day if I was lucky. It was awful! I thought for sure she was going to starve to death. Have you tried any solids? I was able to get her to eat a little bit of bananas and rice cereal during those days and it made me feel a little better to know she was eating SOMETHING…although she wasn’t throwing up…so that might be messy. Like Christine said, it’s probably just the gagging but hopefully it won’t turn into a stomach bug.
Hope he feels better soon!
December 17, 2006 at 9:37 am #20603AnonymousInactiveBabies can dehydrate pretty quickly so if he won’t drink his bottle I’d try giving him some thin cereal made with lots of formula to get some fluids into him, or some baby food with a little formula or pear juice added to increase the fluid content. And/or try using a spoon or syringe to get some pedialyte down. Small amounts (a tablespoon or so) every 15 – 30 minutes will help to keep him hydrated and will be more likely to stay down. Hopefully he won’t get as bad as Myles did, but I had to do that for 3 days with him.
I hope he’s feeling better soon.
December 17, 2006 at 9:47 am #20609AnonymousInactiveYeah, I did the syringe thing too…forgot about that. It didn’t seem like she was getting a whole lot doing it that way but it was better than nothing!!!!!!!!!!
December 17, 2006 at 3:16 pm #20618AnonymousInactiveOh no, hopes he feels better soon. And you’re not alone! Hailey does this everytime she gets a cold, which is almost always, these days. Sometimes the vomitting is so bad that it’s hard to distinguish whether or not it’s a stomach virus. But I think for the most part, it’s generally the mucous triggering her gag reflex. If you can give him something to dry him up that might help a bit. Hang in there.
December 17, 2006 at 9:02 pm #20631AnonymousInactivethanks.. we did the syringe and the spoon.. really messy! i am not sure how much he got from that though.. but your right its better than nothing! and he has had about 16 oz of formula during the day.. and hardly any tonight.. but its better than yesterday! and he really eats well, just drinking he wont really do…. not sure why. but thanks everyone.. hopefully tomorrow will be even better.
December 17, 2006 at 9:52 pm #20635AnonymousInactiveI hope so too!! I’m glad he was able to at least eat some solids. Maybe he’s on the up swing and it’ll be over before you know it!
December 20, 2006 at 8:56 pm #20814AnonymousInactiveo.k so to update everyone he is still very sick, and coughing like crazy. ped said today that it is in his chest, and he needs a nebulizer and antibiotics, anyone every used zithromax? its the generic form, and is anyone familiar w/ the nebulizar? just wondering how your babies did on them. before the zithromax they tried amoxacillan (sp?) and than omicef, and he got a horrible rash on this face from them.
December 20, 2006 at 9:05 pm #20816AnonymousInactiveWe just finished a round of Zithromax yesterday and everything seems great. She did not get any diarrhea from it, have any rashes or reactions and I’m pretty sure it got rid of her ear infections…although I’ll find out for sure next weet at our follow up. Not sure about the nebulizers…I liked the Zithromax b/c the volume of liquid you have to give is a lot less than amoxicillian and it’s only a 5 day course of treatment, as opposed to 7-10 days.
I HOPE HE’S ALL BETTER FOR HIS FIRST CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 21, 2006 at 9:44 am #20836AnonymousInactiveI’ve used Zithromax with all of my children with great results and minimal to no side effects. It’s what I always ask for because it seems to work the best and it’s so easy to give….once per day for five days. I hope it works great for Shane.
As for the nebulizer I’ve used them many times for myself but thankfully my children haven’t needed it. It’s a very good way of getting meds into the luns to help with the airway constriction that may be causing his cough. Is it albuterol that they are giving him through the nebulizer?
I hope he’s feeling better soon.
