Hey.
I’m new to this forum and thanking God everyday that I found it because it’s such a great source for information when you’re losing your mind worried sick about your baby. I was just wondering, my daughter Kate(we think she has reflux, she seems to show all the fun signs)has had HUGE explosive diahrrea(sp?)the past two days. There’s like a little poop in the diaper(breastfed)but mostly liquid. I just made the executive decision to switch peds because our other one wasn’t taking me seriously about my concerns and just blowing me off so she has an appoint. with the new one(wish us luck!)on Wednesday. We think she might have MSPI so I’ve cut all that stuff out the last three days. ANYWAY(Sorry, I get so carried away talking about our issues because you all seem to be the only ones who care), should I take her in sooner? No blood, no fever, and otherwise seems her usual sometimes happy mostly fussy self. I’m a first time Mom so this might sound like a silly question but any advice?

Not sure how old your dd is but that is especially important if she is very young. Keep count of pee diapers too. Good luck and I hope it goes well Wed with the new ped!

Do her explosive diapers have a terrible stench to them? If so, it could very well be a stomach virus. My kids have had their share. They usually start suddenly and one distinctive clue is the horrible stench.
I think it’s a good idea to avoid soy and dairy for a while since many reflux babies are also MSPI.
Good luck with your new ped appointment. Please let us know how it goes.

May 15, 2007 at 9:28 am #33282AnonymousInactiveThanks again you guys for replying. LOL, I definately have OAL. I feel like we have everything wrong these days! I read your link ,Laura, about it which was really helpful but it hasn’t seemed to make such a difference. It seemed like it did the first day and now she’s back to gulping, gagging, screaming, and whimpering while I feed her. I’m so frustrated!!! I didn’t envision breastfeeding to be such an anxiety marathon but oh well. I’m THIS close to just giving her a bottle because I just feel like the difficulty she has with breastfeeding is my fault and just causing her more discomfort on top of the heap she has already. She might have MSPI so I cut out all that stuff including hidden dairy. Maybe the new ped will up her dose of prevacid. Thanks for listening.
May 15, 2007 at 9:43 am #33283AnonymousInactiveI had issues with breastfeeding as well. Cooper and I worked at it for 3 weeks before I realized that he wasn’t gaining wt. He was a big baby at birth 9lbs 11oz, and lost down to 8lbs 10oz and at 3 weeks was only back to 8lbs 12oz, so with that being said, I got over my desire to breastfeed and gave him formula and found out that he does have MSPI and severe reflux so we are on Nutramigen and Prevacid 7.5mg/day. I want a higher dose, but I am having a hard time convincing my GI and my husband (the pharmacist) that it would be beneficial, but he doesn’t fuss unless he is hungry or his tummy hurts, maybe 3-4 times/day now, so I really can’t complain. Just took us 10 weeks to get things under control, which is horrible when you are a first time mom and only want to have a happy healthy baby and you can’t do anything but hold them and try to calm them down. It does get better once you are able to figure things out. Waiting until Weds is probably fine, my ped only works 3 days/wk so I make sure to make my appointments when she is working b/c she is so wonderful… and luckily we have been able to always see her as we haven’t had any emergencies just yet. Good luck with everything.
May 15, 2007 at 10:06 am #33285AnonymousInactivecoopers mom-your husband is a pharmacist….did you show him the info from marci-kids.com? also, dr phillips is the pharmarcist at marci-kids that works with babies on a daily basis, perhaps you could email him. he called our doc personally bc she had never even prescribe a PPI to a baby and when she got off the phone with him she wrote us a script for 30 mg
May 15, 2007 at 10:26 am #33286AnonymousInactiveI did show him the information. He works in a hospital in the neonatal unit and of course they use prevacid on those babies, but b/c they are soooo… small they don’t give more than 7.5mg/day. Cooper appears to be doing okay with it, but my gut tells me he could be doing better. Hubby says he wants to do some research…. usually means eventually he will get to looking at it. But don’t worry, if things get worse I will stay on him as well as the GI.
May 15, 2007 at 10:29 am #33287AnonymousInactivewell yeah…babies metabolize the meds 3- 4 times faster than adults, thats what most people dont realize. they think bc they are small they need tiny doses, but that is not always the case. hope he takes a look at the marci-kids research. my son was still in pain until we got the marci-kids dose. good luck!
