This is what I get for finally taking the kids out of the house and doing something. Last week, I went to a local MOPS meeting. It was the first meeting I’ve been to since Ben was born, and the first time I have left him in a nursery with other people. It was so good to get away for just an hour or so, and he did so well. I was thrilled and looking forward to that time in the future.
However, three days later, the scary cough started, and it hasn’t stopped yet. We took him to the doctor on Wednesday, and he tested positive for RSV. Now his sister has it, and I’m constantly cleaning up snot and vomit from the coughing. When I can convince Ben to struggle to eat with his stuffy nose, he coughs for so long and so hard that he vomits all over the place. It is horrifying to watch him cough and struggle to breath. He throws his arms out, his face gets all red, and his eyes bug out. Awful. His reflux is out of control too.
Anyone know how long this virus sticks around???? The doctor thought on Wednesday that it wouldn’t be too much longer. We are going on day 6 now.

February 3, 2007 at 12:27 pm #23957AnonymousInactiveOh nooooooooo! I am not sure how long it lasts but I truly hope that your family is healthy again SOOOOOOOON!!!
February 3, 2007 at 12:47 pm #23960AnonymousInactiveOh, I’m so sorry that your fun day out turned into this. Poor little guy. It’s happened to us so (not rsv, but plenty of other nasty bugs) many times and it makes me so furious that people take their kids out when they are sick.
I don’t know much about RSV so I can’t give you any advice. I hope it clears up soon.
How was he doing prior to this with his eating and you on TED?
February 3, 2007 at 2:01 pm #23969AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry to hear about the RSV. It’s too bad your fun break resulted in your kids getting sick! I hope everything clears up soon.
February 3, 2007 at 3:00 pm #23975AnonymousInactivemy son had some sort of virus in december. im not sure if it was RSV or not but it was something similair. he was miserable for about 14 days. i know what you are going through.
just remember
“this too shall pass”
thats what i kept remininding myself.February 3, 2007 at 3:30 pm #23985AnonymousInactiveYes, Natalia’s right… “This too shall pass” is also my mantra!
I hope it passes soon for your little guy. HUGS.
February 3, 2007 at 3:31 pm #23986AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone. His cough is still bad today, but it sounds much more productive, so maybe he is clearing it all out. When he threw up this morning, it was all mucous. So gross, but he must have been swallowing it down all night. Poor guy. He cries when he coughs so hard, but when the fit is over, he’s all smiles. I just can’t get him to eat very much. And he is really fighting burping too which only makes him cough more and then puke more, and the cycle goes on….
He was doing pretty well eating before all of this. I think his upped Zegerid dose was really what was needed before.
As far as the TED goes…. I have added back almost all fruits and vegetables that I normally eat at this point. Next will be more meats and then the scary allergens. I’m not sure how to go about it all, but so far I haven’t noticed him reacting to anything that I’ve added (conclusively anyway). He might spit up more with certain foods, but no blood in stool or sleep disturbances out of the ordinary, etc.
February 3, 2007 at 8:05 pm #24017AnonymousInactivePoor Ben and Claire- and mum too. I hope you are heading to the end of it all.
February 4, 2007 at 11:07 am #24055AnonymousInactiveThis is so bad. Horrible… I’m not sure I can handle much more of this. I am petrified of tomorrow when my husband goes back to work and I’m with the both of them alone again. Last week Claire wasn’t as bad, but now she is, and dealing with her and Ben is about to drive us over the edge.
February 4, 2007 at 7:23 pm #24078AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry. I hope things get better soon.
Can you tell me what RSV is? How is it different than whooping cough?
Maybe tomorrow will be better.
February 4, 2007 at 9:25 pm #24084AnonymousInactiveGood luck, and I feel for you….hope it passes soon and that the worst of it is over!
February 6, 2007 at 10:53 am #24196AnonymousInactiveLike my husband says…. RSV is like a bad cold on steroids. Really, it’s like the flu from what I can tell. Lots of snot, mucous, coughing and sneezing. Ben hasn’t had a fever with it, but Claire’s was up to 103.
February 6, 2007 at 11:53 am #24205AnonymousInactiveHope things get better for you guys soon!!! How are they doing today?

February 6, 2007 at 2:12 pm #24212AnonymousInactiveAidan had RSV at the end of Dec./beggining of Jan. He was on nebulizer treatments 2X a day for a week, and it cleared up, however once they have rsv, every cold they get after will probably be 2X as bad as it would have been had they not had RSV, and I think the dr said this can last for a pretty long time. Aidan is getting over a cold, and when he first got it (about a week ago) we had to start the nebulizer again for a few days. RSV is like Bronchiolitis in adults (also close to bronchitus). It’s a very nasty little virus, that can make simple colds horrible long after it’s gone!!!
They tested Aidan to make sure that’s what he had when I took him to the ER. (basically sucked a ton of snot out of his nose and tested it for RSV, it took about 25 mins for the test results to come up).
