Hi Everyone, new here and so thankful I’ve found this board! Wow! My son is 16 weeks and was diagnosed with reflux at about 11 weeks after a lot of suffering. He was diagnosed with MSPI at 3 weeks after bloody stools and has been on alimentum since which fixed the bloody stool problem (gave up BF after a few weeks due to very limited supply of milk). He is on 5mls of compounded prilosec once a day which makes a huge difference with reflux symptoms. He has suffered from mild eczema from time to time. over Christmas he went through a HUGE growth spurt and was demanding 35+ oz of alimentum per day. Dr said not a bad idea to begin trying single grain rice cereal with his formula so we did. Purchased Earth’s Best organic brown rice cereal. He loves it, opens his mouth for it and does well swallowing after only a few tries! But within a day of beginning the cereal his eczema flared up on his torso and legs (small amounts on his arms). He also seemed like he was maybe refluxing again – symptoms weren’t horrible like pre-prilosec days but he seemed uncomfortable and had trouble sleeping like the old days. We are trying to figure out if this is the rice cereal or a reaction to Aquaphor which we’ve been using for a few weeks but have recently put a lot more on him (it contains lanolin). In doing some research I found that EB rice cereal may contain some soy compounds…so i’m wondering if this is the issue. Anyone have any experience with exczema and reflux symptoms worsening with this type of rice cereal? Any others to recommend? Or should I just stop cereal and wait some time and try again? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Typically the baby food brands for MSPI friendliness from best to worst are: Healthy Times, Earth’s Best, Beechnut, and Gerber. Is it possible it is just a reaction to rice in general? 🙁 I would stop the lotion and see if that is by chance the issue…and maybe try switching to oatmeal instead and see if it helps.

is baby in pain?

I read online that Earth’s Best does have soy additives (something about tocopherol) but that Beechnut does not. THat could be the problem I guess. We were trying cereal this early because he has been demanding more and more formula and is looking for 32 oz and more per day and Dr said it would be a good time to try to introduce it to help with his increased appetite. I guess we will back off for a while and try again later.

My LO is 5months and has MFPI, and although I haven’t started him on any solids yet (we’re waiting until past 6 months at least) I thought I’d see if any of the typical cereals are “safe” . Obviously Gerber is out, but I did look at the Earth’s Best and if I remember the ingredient list was pretty short, but wasn’t there some sort of preservatives or something in it? Maybe he’s reacting to that? Or like you said if it has some sort of soy in it that could be the problem. I think I’ve read that a rice allergy is pretty rare, but not unheard of. Any changes in his diapers since starting the cereal?
It could also be the lotion? My son just broke out today with ezcema all over his tummy and nothing in my diet has changed (I’m BF’ing) so I’m guessing it’s the lotion we used after his bath last night. Maybe like the pp said, stop using the lotion and see if it makes a difference?February 17, 2012 at 7:22 pm #69863AnonymousInactiveJust did some research on rice cereals as my son Parker was just diagnosed with MSPI at 4mo. What I found is that the vitamin E in Earth’s Best is soy derived. Boo! The FDA only makes companies put a warning if the product has a protein from soy. I’ve been told that some very sensitive LO’s react to ANY soy. Hope this helps.
