Antibiotics to treat ear infections are a sticky subject for me. I was a child prone to ear infections. I had 2 -3 a year from birth on. I had tubes three times with the last time being when I was 18 years old. I was CONSTANTLY on meds and as I took them more and more, I grew allergic to them. I take them 2 – 3 times and then the next time, I’d break out in horrible hives. Now I’m allergic to penicillin, sulfa, etc. Pretty much the only thing I can take is Zithromax. I can’t say for certain that the many medicines in my childhood contributed to the allergies, but I definitely wouldn’t rule it out. My pediatrician agreed that’d we’d hold off on meds if Gabby ever had an infection, but so far we’ve been fine.

I too had tubes in my ears as a toddler and took round after round of antibiotics to get rid of tons of ear infections. I am allergic to penicillin, sulfa and bioxin and can only take levaquin now.

Thanks for posting this link…my niece has had continuous ear infections since 9 months and she is 16 months old now and has double ear infections now. She is constantly on antibiotics. Poor little thing!
