anyone have a baby with reflux problems that also has problems with respiratory obstruction? if so, would you please share your experiences? on occasion it sounds like my baby is gasping for air, or taking a big breath, like before a yawn. this is not all the time, but often in the evening or when sleeping. anyone else have this? thanks!

I’ve never heard of that before. What does it mean? My daughter would gasp if she had trouble clearing a reflux episode… almost like she’d hold her breath and then it was followed by a gasp- our doc called it laryngiomalacia with stridor.

July 13, 2008 at 12:32 am #53811AnonymousInactiveOur 14 week-old daughter has been struggling with what I call a choking problem between bottles. She will vomit a mucus like substance that will block off her nose and throat, wave her hands in the air and CANNOT breathe…it will last for a few seconds until she can finally get her breath and then she will just start crying. My doctor said this is part of the reflux issue. I have quit my job to stay home because it is a really serious problem and VERY scary at times…….does anyone else have this problem and if so, what does your doctor say?

Thanks for the help! This site is great and seems like a good source for great opinions by moms!
Thanks again!July 18, 2008 at 10:57 pm #54185AnonymousInactiveOur 8 week old wakes up in the middle of the night about 3 hours after she eats screaming and choking and unable to breathe. She seems to be choking on a clear mucus or thick saliva. Her nose then stays congested for a while after that. Our Dr. said she has acid reflux and gave us a prescription for Prilosec. She only spits up a little of her food and not after every meal. We decided not to go with the meds. Anyway does that sound familiar? The Dr. also put a scare into me and said to make sure we take a CPR class, which we had already done, but i came home and reread the paperwork.
July 18, 2008 at 11:03 pm #54187AnonymousInactivei’d give her the medication.
July 19, 2008 at 8:12 am #54199hellbenntKeymastermost doctors don’t start out with that type of med (prilosec). dr must think it’s serious. sounds serious. I, too, would give the meds.
July 19, 2008 at 12:09 pm #54205AnonymousInactivethis happened to my son too starting @ 2wks old. We ended up in ER. He was diagnosed w/ severe silent reflux & eventually put on Prevacid (same as Prilosec). I would also do the med.
July 20, 2008 at 3:52 pm #54240AnonymousInactiveI made it sound like its an everynight thing, but its only happened twice. The Dr we saw wasnt our pediatrician because she wasnt there since we had to make a same day appt after the episode. We are going to see our Dr tomorrow for a second opinion. Other than those two episodes, our daughter just doesnt seem upset when she spits up. She spits up and smiles and laughes. I dont want to be too aggressive with any meds. I thank you for your input and love this website. Do you guys know of any or experience side effects of prilosec in infants since there is no study or FDA approval for use in infants from what i have read.
December 16, 2008 at 12:52 pm #59626AnonymousInactivehello all,
It sounds very serious, is it under control now?I still get choking and ear troubles with my adult reflux issues, it is very annoying. Have you found that any certain conditions or foods will make it easier for your child to breath or not?
November 10, 2009 at 8:05 am #64500AnonymousInactiveMy daughter is the same way and has turned blue and the doc just say she will grow out of it. I feel like the docs just don’t care. I know how you feel and I hope it gets better for you.
