My milk supply is starting to run low, so I needed to find out Reidun’s calcium needs so we can start supplementing. We can’t use rice milk. Perhaps we will use those algae vitamins I posted about earlier? Or just use higher calcium veggies–but most of these you are supposed to wait a year to introduce :/

May 24, 2007 at 6:21 pm #34373AnonymousInactiveI’ve ordered this powdered hypoallergenic calcium from Kirkman Labs for Reidun, hopefully she’ll be able to tolerate it. It seems other parents here have been able to use it with good results 🙂

June 16, 2007 at 1:46 pm #36973AnonymousInactiveThank you very much for posting all detail information. I, too have allergic baby, and I wish I know that I have to avoid major allergen while I was pregnant. I stop breatfeeding him at 1 year, I shouldn’t have!
Currently my baby is trying Neocate and Elecare (cannot tolerate other milk). Seems like Neocate doesn’t work well with him.. this is the first day of his Elecare. Hopefully Elecare works.

This is Reidun’s 1-year-old Rotation Diet, the foods that are italicized are foods we have not tried as of yet with her or we have tried them in the past and she showed some type of intolerance.Heidi T.2007-07-26 16:55:18
July 27, 2007 at 12:39 am #39939AnonymousInactiveHeidi: You are doing an awesom job of keeping track of the rotation diet. It takes a wonderful mom to put such an effort into keeping her child healthy!!!! I hope soon she can eat more and more of other things! Slow but sure wins the race!
August 2, 2007 at 4:25 pm #40377AnonymousInactiveReidun had allergy testing done yesterday for the first time. We’re using the new ImmunoCAP test (blood test). This test is supposed to be more accurate than the ELISA test. She is being tested for milk, soy, egg, rice, oats, wheat and peanut allergies. I’ll let you know the results when we get them.
Any one elso have any ImmunoCAP testing done?August 2, 2007 at 5:19 pm #40389AnonymousInactiveI am thrilled they have a new test! I hope your tests are very accurate and are able to lead you in a great new direction! MFPI to dary and soy are such a handful. I often pray that Carson would have an intolerance to one or the other but not BOTH! I used to use an egg replacer for him – is that what you do with the eggs? It just makes it hard to eat anything prepared at the grocery story/restaurant. I trialed Carson on Vital Jr yesterday but his night was bad so I will wait another 2 months. He didn’t get any spots/rashes/naughty behavior/etc. I really wondered if Carson would have this for life, but with the prior NOT showing up with this trial, I am encouraged! There is hope!! I give the praise to God and to our probiotic!
Let us know about the ImmunoCap test and the results. Anxious to hear. I see that you have MFPI not MFPA, so are you skeptical that she will test NEG to the D,S,E&N as they are intolerances or does this test somehow detect that also? I have been told the intolerances are typically GI – some day they will get a test that can detect GI trouble that will point to intolerances. Then we mom’s won’t have to convince the world that our kids don’t have allergies – but intolerances and they are very, very real! How long til you get the results?August 2, 2007 at 5:53 pm #40391AnonymousInactiveBrenda,
Thank you for the response. The ImmunoCAP is supposed to test for IgE (true allergies, not protein intolerances). We’ve never had any testing other than food trials, but we are pretty sure her negative reactions are due to intolerances and not allergies. Hopefully the tests will be able to answer some of these questions. Our Peds ordered these tests, she says after she gets the results she will refer us to an allergist. She didn’t know how long it would take to get the results back, but she would call us once she got them.I hope if all the results are negative that the medical professionals we deal with won’t blow us off thinking “just intolerances” or worse, that we are making this up or something :/Oh, and to answer your question–I am using egg replacer in my food, but not Reidun’s. We aren’t giving her any grains, and I only use that product in baked goods.I’ll keep you informed! Heidi 🙂August 9, 2007 at 1:00 am #40734AnonymousInactiveHeidi,
I’m so sorry to hear about what you’ve been through and so impressed at your efforts to deal with the MFPI. My son is nearly three, tested negative for allergies to all the major food allergens, and the allergist said this means that his reactions are all intolerances. He also tested negative with the blood test for celiac, but dramatically improved with the removal of gluten from his diet. He does quite well on the restricted diet (no dairy/soy/gluten or beef and no highly acidic things) and we are hopeful that he will be outgrowing this soon. I also feel like I could deal with this long term if I had to, it’s just so much easier if you don’t! I want to thank you for all this information because it’s really a treasure to have this tohether in one place. I will definitely be reading through a lot of this very soon.
Also, Lucas had the rings under and around his eyes and I think he and I both have that line or wrinkle under the bottom lid that you mentioned….I didn’t know anything about that. He was anemic around age one, and I had him on vegetarian diet and i was very restricted with my diet but still eating gluten at the time (we didn’t realize that part of hte puzzle then) and then introduced turkey and chicken and eventually pork after the anemia results. He hasn’t been anemic since. I do worry a b it about his calcium intake, although his rice milk is fortified.THANK YOU again for all this wonderful information. There are so few of us out there that it’s difficult to find this info or find anyone to talk to about this kind of thing. Do you live on the west coast?August 9, 2007 at 4:34 pm #40768AnonymousInactiveWe got back the lab results yesterday–Reidun tested negative for everything! So it seems all her reactions are due in fact to intolerances (IgG) and not allergies (IgE). So she should outgrow everything! 🙂
(The ImmunoCAP testing she had done tests only for IgE, not IgG. I read ELISA tests for both–so this might be something we look into in the future?)Anne: Thank you so much for the nice email! I’m glad your son is doing so much better. And yes, I do live on the west coast. We live in Eugene, OR–pretty far from S. California :/Heidi T.2007-08-09 16:35:52
May 22, 2008 at 2:56 pm #51688AnonymousInactiveIt has been nine months since I last posted. (I feel guilty about this–I’m sorry!) Let me update you on our positive changes!
Reidun can now eat almost everything!! She is eating yogurt now (and her mood actually improves with it) and small amounts of cheese. She can also do all hidden and cooked dairy. We have not tried giving her cow’s milk to drink. I stopped breastfeeding Reidun at 15 months with no problems. Our #1 miracle item has been probiotics!! We used MegaFlora brand, two capsules a day mixed in with her baby food every night for almost 6 months until she could tolerate yogurt. *Immediately* after we started using it she started sleeping from 8:30 to 7:30 solid every night!! Before that, she never slept more than 3 hrs in a row, she was restless all night and rarely was in bed for longer than 8hrs. We are almost certain it was the probiotics that caused this amazing turn around–we changed nothing else. A couple months after being on probiotics we started retrialing foods–she started eating gluten products and eggs with no problems and then soy and dairy with minimal to no problems. It really has been amazing!! She is such a happier girl!!My message in a nut-shell…If your child has digestive issues I would definitely give probiotics a try!!!April 7, 2009 at 3:30 pm #62012AnonymousInactiveAre you still around here? I could so use your help. I am so lost and frustrated. My DS is 5 months and I am sure he has an intolerance but i dont know to what. Did you do a total elimination to figure it out? My son too is extremely restless and doesnt sleep more than 3 hours at a time. I just bought probiotics and am going to give them a try. I hope they work for us like they did for you. My son is happy, not fussy at all. Has had some mucusy poops not all the time. He has eczema and restless sleep. NOt even sure if this is MSPI. I am currently dairy free and am trying to become soy free as well.
I so could use your hellp I am sooo frustratedApril 7, 2009 at 3:52 pm #62013AnonymousInactiveHi! I haven’t posted on here for years but I have this thread marked as a *watch thread* and it came across my email. We have a 3.5 year old with intolerances. I have tried the probiotic and digestive enzymes but we still have digestive issues. Our doc says that it has to happen soon – that he will tolerate. I call what he has – allergies – our doc says that if we did patch testing it would most likely be IGG allergies. I also have found a lot of information on kidswithfoodallergies.org. When I did TED, I went cold turkey and only ate meat, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, rice dream, –I can’t remember what else. But, I sure noticed a difference and then was slow to add foods back. It took a month or so but we had: oats, nuts, citric acid, milk, soy, fish, eggs and wheat (but he tolerated wheat very soon after I eliminated it). If I can be of help to you, please let me know!
My signature isn’t up to date nor is my ticker correct. We have intolerance to milk and soy, but tolerate baked milk. Our little guy is 3.5 years old.TnBEich2009-04-07 15:59:24
April 7, 2009 at 3:59 pm #62014AnonymousInactiveHi MorrisonKM! I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time. I would give the probiotics a try–I wish we would have tried them earlier–they helped us so much! If that doesn’t work, stop soy–make sure you’re not consuming any hidden dairy or soy–soy is hidden everywhere (like vitamins).
Best of luck!!Reidun is doing really good now. She is about 2 1/2 years old–eats anything she wants. Lots of milk, cheese, you name it–no intolerances or allergies to anything!!!Heidi 🙂 -
