my 5 mo dd is MSPI. She was on Neocate thickened w. simply thick since 2 weeks old. 2 weeks ago we started the ALL NEW Neocate and at the same time she started spitting up extreme amounts sometimes making a noise that sounded like vomiting. I was having to feed avery 2 hours!!! Anyway…we decided to switch her to Elecare. The 1st couple of days things seemed better THEN wee are back to HUGE spit ups! At first while burping she will reflux then a little later she makes a noise like she is thowing up and out comes several ounces at a time. This doesnt happen everytime…though. I took her off all solids (to her dismay ) and nothing changed. I am only feeding a fruit in the am (apples, pears or bananas) and vegetable at dinner (sweet potato or squash). I took away all grains as I am allergic to wheat and was afraid that this could be an issue. I didnt see any improvement. Her BM are MUCH looser on the elecare than the Neocate as well. Is this normal? It is so hard to tell when they are on Simply thick. It makes it so gel like! Any suggestions would be great. My GI is out of the country for a MONTH!!! and her ped will not help since she didnt switch her to Elecare.

if her current dose is good then i would stop the apples for now. my little guy was gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, casein free and egg free until 14 months and prior to say 15 months he was really sensitive to apple. applesauce, even though it was a godsend to use for administering probiotics and other stuff would cause nasty rashes and more stomach upset/reflux
bananas are supposed to be a natural anti-acid. so i would say stick to bananas and pears in tiny amounts because it may also be some trouble with moving her food along since her tummy is irritated.
if you are so inclined try some probiotics..since your baby is 6 months she could take some sprinkled in with bananas. it helps with digestion and if stuff gets moved along more efficiently she may have less to spit up. my little guy had trouble a little bit into his start with solids. that prompted an endoscopy which led to erythromycin for delayed gastric emptying. everything seemed to improve after that. so the probiotics should do the same as erythromycin but in a more natural way. solids are harder to digest by an already irritated GI system so that could account for the spit up.
i know w/alimentum the poops are loose. my little guy was on alimentum from week 3 until 13 months when we did a soy trial and he could tolerate that. i believe neocate is supposed to be similar to alimentum so i am not surprised that she is having loose stools.
i hope that helps some. i would use whether she screams or not as well as whether she has wet burps/mucous in poops as indicators for how irritated her tummy is. if the signs are there then you have to go super conservative on the amounts per feeding and do all the positioning tricks like you may have done when she was smaller.
even though the common line we get from docs about how solids stay down better and to thicken stuff the reality is that some of these kids have super duper sensitive systems that react rather strongly to being taxed. solids are taxing to a little body that is already irritated and not coordinating well to move stuff along.
okay sorry for the long windedness. sometimes you gotta hit the reflux with all the guns you have and other times you have to back off to let their little systems regroup.

This makes her mad (would me too). I will skip the apples and just stick with bananas and pears. I think she is sensitive to grains as well. We took out our carpet this week and replaced it with wood so now I can just wipe up the spit up. The things we do for our kids. LOL
