April 12, 2008 at 4:17 pm #50250AnonymousInactivenew info to some and old info to others, but this was sent to me from another mom on the vitamink yahoo group regarding Acid Reflux…and i thought i would share it with this board just in case it might help somebody. if any of this is incorrect, please call attention to it so we can all learn from it!
“homeopathic remedy for reflux called Pleo Alkala and it is the first time in
five years that my daughter has been off her Prilosec “Acid Reflux, or Reflux Esophagitis, is an inflammation of the esophagus caused by regurgitation of the stomach contents and is more commonly recognized by its symptom of heartburn.
Some causes: overuse of antibiotics which destroy the balance of bacteria in the gut, nutritional deficiencies, lack of or insufficient digestive enzymes, yeast overgrowth in the gut. Sugar and acidic foods may aggravate the condition.
Warning: The “purple pill” and other acid reducers can cause pancreatits. Those with developmental delays usually already have problems with receptor functions and this may make matters worse for some.
The following MINERALS may be beneficial for…
ACID REFLUX!SODIUM
Sodium is an electrolyte that helps maintain water balance in the body. Due to its electrical charge, sodium passes back and forth between cell membranes, carrying nutrients (such as glucose) in and carrying waste products out. It also plays a key role in regulating blood pressure and heartbeat. (Baking soda –cuts down on acid, improves ph balance.)SULFUR
Sulfur is an essential component of biotin (in the Vitamin B family), thiamin (B1) and pantothenic acid (B5). It is found in all skin and connective tissue and is vital for the growth of hair and nails. Sulfur plays an important role in energy metabolism, insulin production and hormone synthesis.
(Also Epsom Salt/Baking Soda baths –put in tub for every bathtime. MSM powder 1/8 tsp per day, Molybdenum 50-500 mcg a day, and others help to open the sulfation pathways.)
The following VITAMINS may be beneficial for…
ACID REFLUX!COBALAMINE (B12)
Vitamin B12 prevents anemia by regulating red blood cell formation and iron utilization. It aids in digestion and cell formation, promotes fertility, and prevents nerve damage by maintaining the sheaths that cover them.
Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin: shots, lozenges, nasal spray)VITAMIN B COMPLEX
The B vitamins promote healthy nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and brain function. The B vitamins are also coenzymes involved in energy production. B Complex is important for elderly people and a deficiency can mimic Alzheimer’s disease. (B-Complex 50 or Kirkman’s)The following NUTRIENTS/SUPPLEMENTS may be beneficial for…
ACID REFLUX!PROBIOTICS
ProbioticsHelp promote a healthy GI tract and improved digestion and immune function. Crowd out bad bacteria and yeast (From the Healthfood store, Kirkman’s)
Digestive Enzymes
From Kirkman’s or Houston Neutraceuticals, Inc.
Helps the GI tract properly digest food so it doesn’t back up the esophagus.
Candex: To break the outer shell of the yeast so the probiotics work better.
No-Fenol: by Houston can help process foods high in phenols and salicylates.
Glycine
This amino acid has innate acid neutralizing effects as well as soothing effects on your gastric mucosa and smooth muscle of the GI tract. Glycine is a potent healing agent that promotes your body’s repair of damaged and stressed tissue. (TMG –Trimethyl-glycine or DMG –Dimethyl-glycine, from Kirkman’s)Aloe Vera Juice
From the local healthfood store. A little (2 oz) in water everyday.
Candida: The Yeast Connection
(Note: Refluxamine is just a namebrand product which has ingredients to help reflux. The info on heartburn and acid refux is good info. But I am not promoting Refluxamine although the product looks helpful.)
Heartburn Actually Originates in the GI Tract.
It results an intestinal yeast-fungus called Candida albicans overgrows.
This yeast-fungus can stunt your immune system, making you prone to seasonal bacterial, parasitic and viral infections. This yeast-like fungus thrives deep within your colon and produces nearly a hundred different toxins.
These toxins are responsible for many symptoms of heartburn. (***And neurological “behavior” symptoms in developmentally delayed children and those on the Spectrum) Candida albicans is a common organism which frequently gets out of control when our healthy digestive bacterial balance is invaded in some way. (Including too many antibiotics.)
High sugar and acidic foods can cause this imbalance.
Normally 80% of the organisms in your digestive tract are beneficial, if you are healthy.
Unfortunately, most of us who eat a Standard American Diet (SAD) have developed an imbalance.
When Candida gets in the bloodstream, it attaches itself not only to the intestines and genital tract, but also to the mouth, throat and other parts of the body.
Candida Can Result in Acid Reflux
When the accumulation of Candida in the colon becomes massive, it begins to ferment and then reflux upwards through the small intestines, through the stomach and up into your throat.
Inevitably, this yeast fermentation can cause more gas, bloating, belching and difficulty in completely digesting your foods. This is the source cause of heartburn, or GERD.
Getting rid of candida is not usually quick or easy, but can be achieved over a period of several months.
However, Refluxamine™ begins to work immediately to soothe the pain and discomfort while helping to heal your imbalance at the source, deep in your colon.
Blended at the molecular level for a powerful synergistic affect Refluxamine™ is formulated with Calcium carbonate. This helps to both neutralize your stomach acid for immediate relief while also promoting more alkaline balanced body chemistry.
(Most kids take a calcium/magnesium supplement and are off of dairy which may worsen GI issues and Reflux. Sometimes prescription yeast killers are used short term to improve the GI enough for the probiotics to take root and work.)
