Did any of your toddlers who were successfully weaned from meds have any flare ups afterwards? Sarah has been med free for 4/5 months and things have been GREAT! For once in her life I don’t question reflux over every whimper and cry. However, she has been VERY irritable lately and it’s starting to seem sporadic (unlike the constant bad days we would see with illness, etc…) Then this morning her breath smelled acidy. For the first time in soooooooooo long I started to question reflux again! Is that possible?!?!
Are there certain triggers for your LOs that you know to avoid? The only thing she ate prior to the last “fussy episode” was a few bites of extra greasy pizza the night before?? Could that have done it? Are there certain foods your LO can’t have now even though they’re not on a PPI anymore? Does illness or teething cause flare ups for your LOs who have been previously weaned from meds??
I even heard her sort of hiccup a few times and then swallow over the last few days. The past 2 nights she has woken up crying a few times…but not hard enough that we had to go get her or anything…she went back to sleep on her own. That is still uncommon for her though.
She IS cutting her first eye tooth and I know those can be particularly painful. I’m just at a loss. Any insight would be appreciated!
PS- The one thing I HAVEN’T done is try a squirt of mylanta or give TUMS to see if it made a difference…I will definitely try that though at the next sign of “potential” flare up.
PPS – Now that she is a little older she will *sometimes* tell me where it hurts. Yesterday during the thick of things I asked her where her ouchie was and she pointed to her forehead?!?!?! What the heck? Headache?! Sinus pressure?! I’ll have to teach her to associate reflux pain with her throat, mouth, chest area so next time I ask if that IS the problem then I’ll know!

My first thought was going to be teeth. And since you say eye teeth, I have heard even non reflux babies have a really hard time with those. We are cutting our first molars which is not fun either. I would try the mylanta or tums and see how she does. It may just be b/c of the teeth. Lets hope at least.February 25, 2008 at 9:16 am #48565AnonymousInactiveCutting teeth causes more saliva/swallow, that causes more hystamine acids in the tummy (according to our Pedi), so bendaryl, (if you don’t get the hyper reaction) is good for this and yes, can definitely be a flair up in kids that did not have reflux issues as a baby, so mylanta or benadryl would be my two choices.
Hope the teeth come in soon!February 25, 2008 at 2:16 pm #48573AnonymousInactiveHey Amy, I’m betting it’s the teeth too, but I also wanted to comment on the flare ups for toddlers issue. Claire (4) obviously isn’t cutting teeth, but she still had flareups for quite some time. Last year was particularly bad. I really think, for her anyway, that the reflux tends to flare up with stress (last year’s new brother!), seasonal allergies, and sometimes but rarely with foods. I don’t notice flares with acidic foods, but more with greasy ones.
She will also reflux “mommy I have throw up in my mouth” if she has been laughing really hard, running around after a meal, etc.A few times she will also reflux in the night if she is having a nightmare. I posted about this awhile ago. This has really settled down of late, so I’m thinking the high occurence of the nightmares was a stage that she has grown out of.Anyway, that was a lot of rambling.. all to basically say, that I think former refluxers are just more sensitive and can have a short bout of reflux without it meaning that they need to go back on meds. Through all of the above mentioned situations, I just gave Claire a Tums and she was fine.Hopefully, the eye teeth will come in soon. Ben is cutting 3 molars right now, and he is a hicupping, drooling mess. Not looking forward to the eye teeth!!!edited to add…. isn’t it hilarious to hear them try to describe their pain and where it hurts? I asked Claire one time what it felt like when she refluxed, and she said it was like a bone from her leg was coming up into her stomach and into her throat. I laughed, but then I thought.. good grief that DOES sound painful!Bensmama2008-02-25 14:19:02
February 25, 2008 at 5:48 pm #48589hellbenntKeymasterjonah still refluxed here & there until maybe 3 or even closer to 4…
I don’t think it was food related?crying related, yes. maybe swallowing all of the air?ari, non refluxer, got kinda refluxy from illness & teething combo- lots of drool & mucous and swallowing it…I give out Tums like crazyFebruary 26, 2008 at 7:50 pm #48619AnonymousInactiveI hope you are all right and this is just teeth. The past few days have been much better but she did wake up crying this morning at 5:30ish. She went back to sleep on her own but obviously something is bothering her. Ugh! Guessing games all over again!
This morning was the first bad episode really since I posted so I haven’t tried TUMS or mylanta yet, but they are handy in the cupboard!
Laura – Do you give Ari regular TUMS to chew or do you crush them and mix with water? I wonder if Sarah could handle chewing TUMS on her own yet…???
February 26, 2008 at 7:59 pm #48621AnonymousInactiveI bet she could, Amy. I think you’ve mentioned that she has molars, right? I would probably try to break it in a couple of pieces and give it to her that way.
February 27, 2008 at 9:14 pm #48669hellbenntKeymasteryea, I break regular store brand tums into quarters & give them to him that way- I also give him Tylenol meltaways if I have them on hand (I always find myself looking up the dose on http://www.askdrsears.com)
