Reflux and no allergy?

Is it possible that a baby just has severe acid reflux with no allergy and just have an immature Lower esophageal sphinter? or is allergy what causes reflux?

There are many babies that don’t have any time of intolerance/allergies and do just have an immature LES. From what I have seen those babies tend to out grow the reflux sooner than those with intolerances/allergies.

Yes, I agree with what Beth said. We had a “questionable” intolerance. I only say that b/c we started hypo formula AND a good dose of PPI at the same time and I never knew if she really needed the formula…I didn’t care though b/c she was finally HAPPY! Regardless…it is possible to JUST have reflux.

Jonah had severe GERD.

He was (basically) med free at 12 months old.

He was not MSPI (I did the elimination diet when breastfeeding).

We had a really horrible day of feeding. Cole only had 4oz by 6pm today. Those 4oz were a struggle too. He would take a suck or 2 and reel back as if in pain, then he just refused and cried. I tried spooning the formula and sippy, but after a couple of attempts he would cry.

I know that I wasn’t suppose to, but I was desperate tonight after trying the bottle again. I put a little rice cereal into 1oz of formula and spooned it to him, he ate it right up! I was also able to give him the sippy in between with just formula in it and he took it. I don’t understand why he will eat the formula with rice, but not without it.

We don’t know what he (if anything) he is allergic that is why he is suppose to be on Neocate only. He has been on Neocate only for 20 days with no improvement still. I know that I should probably wait longer, but today he wouldn’t eat at all!

I told Doc this, and she wants a blood and urine panel on him tomorrow.

I feel so guilty and bad for giving him rice cereal today. Tomorrow, I will try again to spoon only formula and see if he’ll take it. I think today was the day that his full blown aversion has come forth. He’s been feeding very poorly at night from the bottle as well, only taking 1-2oz. He wouldn’t even take a bottle for his bedtime the last 2 nights, had to give by sippy cup.

I tried sleep feeding again bc on this forum it seems to work for many, but this darn baby won’t do it. I even gave him a pacifier (which he never takes) that he actually took tonight before turning in for the night, waited till he was very calm, pulled it out and stuck a bottle in, and nope, would not, would not take it.

Laura, I’m a dork, I see u did TED to find that ur baby was not MSPI.

Wow, I am so sorry he barely took anything. Can you request that your GI do a modified barium swallow study on him. Reading this just makes me wonder if he aspirates formula that is not thickened with something. This test will show what thickness he needs to eat if that is the problem. It seems odd to me that it has to be thicker for him to take (or not odd, but makes me think he has swallowing problems) and if he is that uncomfortable with a thin liquid, he will refuse it and cry during feeds even if on a PPI drug.

Just my thoughts. I’d demand that to be done to rule out aspiration/swallowing problems.

I am so sorry you are going through this!!!

P.S. we never had a Modified barium swallow study done, but maybe someone else can chime in or you can check under procedures and see if there is anything in there.

My daughter has BAD reflux but has no allergies AT ALL!
