Oh NO! Ryann has come down with some flu like symptoms. She has had diarhea and vomiting all day. Everything is a mess: carseat, bouncy chair, high chair, activity center, floor, me! The poor baby has a fever of 102 even though I gave her tylenol. I can’t get her to take pedialyte. Has anyone used the freezer pops? Talk about vomiting everything out of her stomach. Now I know how those not so silent refluxers parents feel! If ya’ll have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I’ve never had an infant so sick before!
February 8, 2006 at 9:27 pm #1195AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear that Ryann also has the stomach flu. Hope it doesn’t last long.
February 9, 2006 at 12:02 pm #1213AnonymousInactivei have tried the pedialyte popsicles-she didn’t like them, but she doesn’t like anything fluid to go into her mouth. have you tried motrin to get the fever down? hope it doesn’t last long, both of my kids have a fever too- are we having fun yet???
February 9, 2006 at 1:03 pm #1223AnonymousInactiveOh no – I hope Ryann feels better soon!
No experience here with Pedialyte – will she take any juice?
I’d be wary of the Motrin unless doctor advises. She’s only barely 6 months and Motrin can be tough on GERDlings tummies.
February 9, 2006 at 1:15 pm #1225AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone, fever is going down, vomiting is getting better, but still having the diarrhea every 1-2 hours. She liked the pedialyte pop for about 5 mins. then threw it. The nurse said it is the new virus that is going around, usually lasts a few days. Guess I’m in for it. Ya know how it works, once one gets it everyone does
February 9, 2006 at 6:28 pm #1240AnonymousInactiveNate’s tummy bug lasted from Friday night until the following Thursday morning. I literally used a straw to dribble water into his mouth b/c I couldn’t get him to take anything. The dr also recommended sorbet, b/c it has a high water content. Of course Nate hated it, but maybe Ryann will like it … worth a try.
{{{hugs}}} I hope she’s feeling better soon!
February 9, 2006 at 9:10 pm #1250AnonymousInactiveOh – sorry to hear Ryann is feeling yucky. Hopefully she feels better soon and nobody else gets it!!!
February 10, 2006 at 9:03 am #1263AnonymousInactiveSharon, i think sorbet has a little bit of milk in it. Did Nathan have huge amounts of gas? Her stomach hurts her soooo bad. Her stomach is so hard and painful. This is day number 4 and still on no food. Everytime I give her milk she vomits and has even more horrible gas. What a horrible virus, i keep thinking that something else could be wrong too. I might try the water trick. Tried Zegerid this morning, had a sample because we were feeding her prevacid in applesauce and that is coming up, plus i have to fight her to take it. Did it work right away, or am i in for it. Prevacid takes 2 weeks to be effective. This is so hard! thanks!
February 10, 2006 at 9:28 am #1266AnonymousInactiveSarah – Sherbert has milk in it, sorbet does not. It’s basically just fruit sugar and water. I was hesitant to give it b/c I thought sugar would make the diarrhea worse, but the doc said that we are going to be dealing with diarrhea for a while even after he is better anyway, and if it’s the only way to get hydration in him, it’s OK. DId that make sense? I’m not sure, b/c now I am sick too. Ugh. Try mixing her formula with Pedialyte, up to 75% Pedialyte. It might be easier on her tummy. I think when switching PPIs, it doesn’t take a full 2 weeks but it could take a couple of days. Warning … the Zegerid tastes like crap. But believe me I understand the desparate feeling of needed to get those meds in. I think the last 5 times Nate puked, it was really just a violent reflux attack. Totally sucks. FWIW, Nate’s bug lasted 6 days … bopth docs we saw said 5-7 … so while it feels like she will never get better, she will. {{{hugs}}}
February 10, 2006 at 9:33 am #1267AnonymousInactiveI also would try motrin as it seems more effective than tylenol. Isaac has never had a problem with it and I have been giving it to him since he was 4 months old. Also have you tried different flavors of pedialyte? I couldn’t get Isaac to take any of them but some babies like the flavored kinds. When Isaac had a stomach virus he didn’t keep anything down and they said as long as he had 3 wet diapers in 24 hours it was ok! Also you may want to try mylanta for the upset tummy or mylicon (which occasionally works) for gas. I hope Ryann is feeling better soon!
February 10, 2006 at 10:31 am #1282AnonymousInactiveBe careful with the Motrin … it gives some kiddos a tummy ache. I wouldn’t give it on an empty stomach. Motrin always works better for Nate than Tylenol, and I did give him some last Saturday, but only after he ate a few Cheerios.
February 10, 2006 at 11:32 am #1284AnonymousInactiveSarah, duh i completely forgot about our old friend mylanta. thanks for the reminder. i guess i am so sleep deprived i cant think! thanks, i will def get some motrin to have on hand, think fevers gone and diarrhea is subsiding.
Sharon- thanks for the milk/pedialyte tip, i tried it this morning and so far it has stayed down. Joel emailed on the zegerid dose and said it will be very effective in 4-5 days. I just need to get the doc. to accept 30 mgs and day instead of 20 mgs.
So nice to have some help during this time. crazy how a simple cold or 3 day virus turns everything upside down with these reflux babies. Everything is so trial and error! Sarah
