Is he teething again? Like the 2yo molars? If so maybe increased saliva? Have you raised his bed? I know when we switched from elevated crib to toddler bed I forgot to elevate for a couple nights and we had increased night reflux. Or maybe Is he swallowing toothpaste when brushing prior to bed? Is he eating iceberg lettuce or darker colored lettuce. I think the darker the lettuce the healthier and therefore maybe more acidic? Do you “skin” the apples? My dh has bad reflux to apple peel. Not sure but those are some thoughts sorry couldn’t be more help.
I’m confused about the food/reflux link here myself. Kayleigh can eat salsa, enchiladas and tomato sauce with no increased reflux but if she eats turkey or ham she cries, arches and has big increases in her reflux. Hope Seth is back to having better nights soon.
March 15, 2007 at 4:00 pm #27590AnonymousInactivehmm. thanks guys. Seth does tolerate applesauce fine so maybe it is the enzyme in apples. Also, interesting about the turkey and ham. I have been giving him more turkey lunch meat lately but that did not even occur to me. It is strange, he too can eat some of the foods you are suppossed to avoid on the traditional reflux diet like marinara sauce but other things really set him off that you would think would be fine. He was doing well for a couple of nights since my post but it fell apart last night. I’m blaming the Sun Chips he ate before bed but who knows???? I hate always playing the guessing game!
March 15, 2007 at 7:47 pm #27601AnonymousInactiveLunch meats have a lot of additives….nitrites, carageenan, etc. I don’t know much about them but they’re not natural and generally not considered healthy, so maybe that’s part of the problem. I get really bad indigestion when I eat luch meats.ndrose2007-3-15 19:48:13
March 15, 2007 at 8:06 pm #27603AnonymousInactiveLynn, our specialist asked if Carson was having trouble with meats. He said if I could pinpoint a food -or food group – that he could possibly suggest a solution. HA. Solution. Anyway, he said that children who have trouble digesting meats sometimes can benefit from enzymes. Maybe talk to your doc about it. Just something that was mentioned to us at our appointment.
March 15, 2007 at 10:56 pm #27607AnonymousInactiveIt is sooooo hard to pinpoint a food or food group, I’ve tried journaling everything she eats and kept labels of ingredients for weeks but a pattern never showed up. We usually eat organic meats and she does great on red meats, pork (except ham & bacon), chicken and fish. Oh yeah I forgot she does well with beef bologna also. I can’t figure out the Turkey, Ham thing.
Tiffany~ I say blame the Sun Chips! I blame them for my thighs well , and Dairy Queen also but thats another story. LOL I hope Seth starts to sleep better soon. Please forgive me if it’s not you guys but wasn’t he having difficulties with brushing teeth? Is that better? Kayleigh had 3 cavaties that needed to be filled and 1 was abcessed and she brushes 4-6 times a day (only 2x’s with toothpaste though)! Her dentist blamed alot of her tooth problems on her reflux so I felt a little better but darn this reflux monster. It causes such problems with everything!
March 16, 2007 at 11:26 am #27627AnonymousInactiveOur oldest, Talon, had trouble with his back molars. Our dentist said that when he was refluxing (9 months before he was diagnosed – many doctors, many hospitals and finally he was diagosed and I wasn’t the crazy one!) that the acid that comes up his esophogus does in fact get into their mouths and eats away at their teeth. He also said that it is common for refluxers to grind their teeth and that can cause huge problems also. Talon was our first and I always had him brush his teeth and help him, so I too, was surprised at the cavity bit with Talon, but I blame it on reflux!
March 21, 2007 at 1:32 am #28025AnonymousInactiveLynn, can toothpaste worsen reflux? Just curious… I saw your remarks above. Lucas’ sleep has been spotty and we switched toothpastes and I never even THOUGHT of the toothpaste…
When did you all first visit the dentists with your refluxers? I haden’t even thought of the acid/cavity link. Lucas brushes each night and I floss his teeth once a day but geez your comments on cavities have me scared. We haven’t been yet and he’s 2 & 1/2– and our first so forgive me if I’m clueless on the dentist front
Also, with meats or any foods I guess, a child can have a problem with the proteins in that particular food. Probiotics can be helpful with all this as well. Helps their little gi systems do a better job.
March 21, 2007 at 2:00 am #28026AnonymousInactiveFrom what our ped dentist said yes swallowing toothpaste could worsen the reflux. I’m really trying to get her to spit but it’s hard to teach that appropriately
I took Kayleigh to the dentist for the first time at 18 mos because her ped told me that her reflux could cause problems with the tooth enamel if not controlled. Obviously we weren’t/aren’t as controlled as we thought. She has gone 6 times now and she still likes it so thats a plus! We brush and floss twice a day together but she gets to brush as often as she likes with water only.
I’ve been giving much thought to trying probiotics. Do they really work? I’ve also been told that if she takes them then she can also take an enzyme (sp?) that would help remove any accidental gluten from her system. Does that sound familliar to you? Just curious
