For those of you with toddlers that went from hypo/elemental formula to Rice Milk..
Landen is making the initial switch to Rice Milk, since (as best as we can tell) he cannot handle milk or soy protein. His pedi said his diet is good enough so that we don’t need to add anything extra to his enriched Rice Milk (I bought Rice Dream) but I would like to add something on days he eats lousy. Any suggestions on what to add and how much? I thought about adding flaxseed oil b/c I like what I’ve read about the benefits to the immune system with that too? Any ideas of how much to add per 8oz bottle or sippy? Thanks in advance!March 10, 2008 at 7:05 pm #48934AnonymousInactiveHi Jill,
Sorry to hear the Landen isn’t tolerating milk/soy still. I have heard olive oil and I would think all you need is 1Tbsp would be plenty and you really may not need that much. Just think about the fact that whole milk has 8grams of fat per 8oz and as long as the rice milk with the added fat has that much you will be fine. Best of Luck. I hope he grows out of this MSPI soon. I am pretty sure Cooper has outgrown it all, but I don’t want to be too optomistic. Oh and Happy Belated B-day Landen!!!!March 10, 2008 at 7:12 pm #48935hellbenntKeymasterflaxseed oil is great- just remember that you cannot heat it, but adding it to rice milk isn’t heating it
any chance of making a rice milk smoothie on those ‘off’ days? maybe rice milk w/ banana (or any fruit he can tolerate & likes) and added flax seed oil?March 10, 2008 at 9:54 pm #48936AnonymousInactiveThanks Ladies!
Beth can you believe how fast the year went by? 🙂 Happy Belated B-day to Cooper too. I love that new pic of him. I need to upload one of landen. I am holding out hope that b/t age 2-3 we may be able to do milk or soymilk. So far Landen isn’t too keen on the taste of Rice milk. I gave him a tiny bit in his sippy at lunch and he blew it out with a huge raspberry at me! Funny, after tasting Neocate for a year! lol. I saw Oat milk in the store as well, I suppose that could be an option too.Laura, thanks for the reply! I love the benefits of flaxseed. Smoothies are a great idea. Landen loves blueberries and blueberries=antioxidants!March 11, 2008 at 1:48 pm #48941AnonymousInactiveHi, We add oils as well. We add about a teaspoon to two teaspoons per bottle (still on two bottles a day.) We add the olive oil to his bottles. And will give him flax oil by mouth (a lemon flavor kind)..and sometimes cod liver oil by mouth as well (which he LOVES the strawberry kind we get).
Let me know if you have any questions! And maybe you can mix the neocate and rice milk together until just rice milk eventually? I still need to warm our rice milk up!!haha.. because we used to warm his formula..and have not been able to give any milk cold yet!March 11, 2008 at 2:44 pm #48945AnonymousInactiveThanks Lauren!
I thought about trying goats 50/50 with rice like you, but the pedi was concerned about protein in goats since landen has such a rough time with ANY amount of protein, even green beans. And Landen will only drink rice milk warm too. He only likes the vanilla kind too. ugh! he will not touch the original flavor!Laura, thanks for reminding me that flaxseed oil cannot be heated! Good to know since landen still likes bottles and sippy’s of milk heated (still gets bottles at nap and bedtime) -
