Caitlin just got back from GI, the dr seems nice and knowlegable, for now he wants to keep the ppi as is and justed wanted to add oatmeal to the bottle with 1 tbsp to every 2 oz of formula. i tried that and Caitlin seems to like it better, but i thouht it seems to be pretty thinck but Caitlin wont take it once i tried to lessen the amout of the oatmeal. I now getting worried because i thinking that it would be alot of oatmeal that she will be consumming per day, i know it increased the calories which Caitlin will benifit from it but is there any bad thing to it? Does it make these lo go longer without feeling hungry and therefore lessen the amout of formula that she’s taking? and when you mixed the formula, does it come out almost like a thin shake? thanks for letting me know
January 28, 2006 at 10:15 am #233AnonymousInactiveFormula thickening really worked for us. Yes, it is ALOT of cereal to take in. It can reduce the amount of formula that the baby takes, but it didn’t for us.
The only bad thing about thickening, as long as Caitlin doesn’t have a problem with the oatmeal, is that it can cause problems with constipation. Mylanta Cherry Supreme really helped us with that. I also gave Ally small droppers of water during the day, but since Caitlin is FTT, maybe give formula instead? Just a little squirt here and tere made a big difference for us.

everyone has differing opinions about thickening…
like Tiffany writes, it really helped her lo. There are others who tried and decided to stop, as weight gain wasn’t an issue for their lo.
you can always do a search & see what others here have thought over the years (sorry the text beow is so big- I’ve copied & pasted it and the site won’t ‘let’ me make it smaller!)
to do a search: there’s the ‘search’ button located in the upper right hand corner of the screen
you put the key word/s you’re searching for
then you choose “Topic Subject” from the drop- down menu of “Search In”
then I like to choose “All Forums” from the drop- down menu of “Search Forum”
then I like to choose “Topic Start Date” from the drop- down menu of “Sort Results By” (this way I get all the posts from the past that might help me)

It significantly cut down the amount of spitting up and seemed to make her more comfortable. We did 1 Tbsp per oz. Like you said, it was really thick, but Kaelyn never had a problem with it. Even with thickened formula, she was never able to take more than 4 oz at a time, so we were really glad for the extra calories. She rarely drank more than 20 oz of formula a day, but she’s done just fine and neither the ped nor the ped GI ever seemed worried about it.
