Our doctor wanted to put my dd on propulsid (aka cisapride). We had previously tried domperidone without success, as well as prilosec and prevacid. I insisted that the problem was due to the fact that my dd wasn’t getting enough dose of PPI in a good form, and insisted on trying that instead. I don’t know anything about your friend’s child, so it’s hard to comment, but I would ensure that the child has had all the necessary tests done before to ensure that she is a safe candidate for propulsid, and that the doctor intends to do the necessary monitoring. If this med is a last resort and is absolutely needed, then your friend may have no choice, so it’s important to make sure that the child is being monitored by the doctor. But often, I’ve found that adequate testing to identify the problem, as well as proper dosing of a PPI are not done prior by many doctors. They say that they can’t up the dose and try low doses of many different meds, then say to try higher risk drugs. If it’s possible, your friend may want to get a second opinion to make sure that this is really the best and only option.
Sorry, but I don’t know too much about this med as I did not consent to give it to my daughter. But if you search this forum, or other reflux forums, you might be able to find more info. I have run into others in cyberspace who have used this med out of desperation.
If you post back with more info about the child, her treatment and symptoms, we may be able to help your friend’s daugher.
Good luck.
