I have a question for probiotic users. Initially we were using SolarRay infant powder formula that we got from the health food store. Worked fine. When we ran out, I decided to purchase online for a “better deal.” So I got the baby Jarro formula and it seems to be working ok, but I was confused b/c Baby Jarro is refrigerated at the health food store and it was just sent US Mail (in 90 degree FL weather) when I ordered it online. So, I called vitacost.com who assured me that the potency is guaranteed until the product is opened. I was suspicious of this claim so I contacted Jarro who told me I had been misinformed by Vitacost, and she went on to tell me exactly how much percentage of bacteria per day is lost when unrefrigerated. She agreed with me that there was no way to know how long the product was sitting in the warehouse at vitacost before it was sent to me. Vitacost keeps their warehouse just below room temp. So, I guess my question is, do all of you buy your probiotics on line or at the store? Does anyone get them shipped to them in a cooler? Do some probiotics just not need refrigeration. Sorry, that’s more than one question…

If I order online, I usually order directly from the company that makes the probiotic (usually Klaire labs or Kirkman). They both ship express with an ice pack. Of course the ice pack has melted by the time I receive the probiotics 2 or 3 days later, but I have been told by the companies that their products can remain at room temperature about a week or so without significant loss in potency.
Ann Marie – we use TherBiotic Complete with Ben and it does require refrigeration to maintain viability of the probiotic. They have done testing that determined minimal loss of potency if left unrefrigerated for about 1 week, but beyond that they highly recommend refrigeration. Did you order direct from Klaire labs?

It was a couple of years ago now, and I did see some inital difference, and then not enough to continue, so I used up the bottle and then just stopped. I am curious now if it would have helped him better. I didn’t remember the ice pack, but it was quite a while ago. maybe three years? Carter wasn’t born yet and carter is now two so two years at least.
He does have other digestive discomfort, that I should try it again. I see alot of threads on the probiotics lately and I bet that Dylan would benefit from them. I was thinking he was having trouble with certain foods. I pm’d christine (kevieb) but haven’t heard from her in a bit, but was curious how they test for the celiac gene? I think just blood and then they need to do endoscopy and biopsy to confirm celiac? He just has had some trouble lately and a ton of carbs in his diet so something to look into for him I think….Anyway, thanks for the info! It makes sense!!June 2, 2008 at 8:30 pm #52097AnonymousInactiveI knew Sheri would have the answer. you Rock!!!
