Hi,
I’m new to this site, but have viewed a lot of posts and have got a much better idea about reflux and solutions. First want to thank you all for the inputs in the website, so much good information and this must have helped a lot of babies. I’m here not for my own child, but for my cousin’s reflux baby, now a 12 weeks old girl named Dodo, it breaks my heart to see both the mom and the baby going through so much pains and desperations…poor baby almost stopped gainning weight… But the thing is they are not in U.S. but in Asia, and I’m traveling to visit them early next month, so if anything i can bring to help them, I would.
Is Zegerid, Prilosec, and Prevacid only by prescrption? If so any OTC medication may be supplemental help? Beside that I need your opinions/suggestions: From what I found in this site, Dodo has started Prilosec (not the exact Prilosec here but adult format Losec in capsule) for a week or so, and it has helped in easing her pain but not as effective as many of you said, I suspect 2 reasons: 1) The losec was given by taking little beads from Losec capsule and gave to the baby with water. I understand water is not protecting the med, so any suggestions? I learned about Cocoabase or CaraCream, are they still available at either Atlanta area or San Francisco/Bay area? Are they also by prescription? How can I get them? 2) Dosage: Dodo receive Losec once a day, in the morning 30 minutes before feeding, about 0.6mg/kg each dose. Is this enough dose? She is about 10 lb now. Shall give once a day or twice or three times a day? 3)Last question but very important, anybody used Domperidone to your reflux baby like this young? If no why? If yes, how does it work? Any side effects? Can it be used together with Prilosec? Thanks a lot for your replies!

I have a lot to say in my welcome/intro:but I want to just say that if you contact http://www.marci-kids.comthey actually may be able to sell caracream to your cousin in Asia! they’re not allowed to sell it here (USA) anymore (long story, again from my welcome/intro)…you can also check the dose of prilosec for the baby from there- her dose actually sounds a bit low…if you click here, you can read about administering the capsules- it’s called ‘prevacid 101’ but really it’s about prilosec, too: (last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1March 19, 2008 at 6:36 pm #49148AnonymousInactiveOlivia,
I totally agree with what Laura has pointed you to. I want to say Thank you to you for being an advocate for your cousin. Some of the meds that are prescription here aren’t always that way in other countries so she may be able to get so other meds that work for our babies without a prescription in Asia, but I am not sure. I don’t think we have any forumn members from Asia but if we do I hope that they can chime in and help you out some. I hope things get better for your cousin and her baby.March 19, 2008 at 7:24 pm #49149AnonymousInactiveLaura and Beth,
Thanks a lot for giving the advice so quickly. I’ve just emailed MARCI-KIDS. and the links is useful.
Is anybody in the States used Motilium (Domperidone type) to child below 1 year od? Will it has side effects? Thanks!

For the Losec it should be alright to give it in a small amount of an acidic food/drink, like applesauce or applejuice, on an otherwise empty stomach. Then follow up with a feeding 30-60 minutes later. My daughter was on domperidone (also called Motilium) for a little while. There is no problem giving it along with a PPI like Losec. It is a GI motility drug, and very safe in terms of side effects. Domperidone isn’t available in the states, but it is here in Canada. The recommended dosage for infants is 0.25 – 0.5 mg/kg of body weight to be given 3-4 times a day. Unfortunately, my daughter didn’t do well on domperidone. She was uncomfortable and very irritable – it seemed like it was causing cramping.Hope this helps a bit!MFPIx22008-03-19 21:54:05
March 20, 2008 at 10:18 am #49165AnonymousInactiveJust a bit more to add-
We did the losec capsules and domperidone for a while when Hailey was smaller. As for the dose… it sounds good, but I’d try splitting it into 2 or 3 doses. Also make sure to give it as Sheri said above.Caracream worked really well for my dd. We’re in Canada and got it directly from marcikids, but losec doesn’t taste very good, and so this was an issue for my dd. Marci-kids is now supplying CaraCream again in the US, whether they’re supposed to be or not, as I know several people who have gotten it directly from them without participation in any research etc. About the domperidone- we used it for a while. I didn’t keep up with it as it needed to be given 4-5 times a day, can’t remember, and I found it impossible along with her 2-3 doses of losec and 3 doses of laxative! It also gave Hailey cramps so we stopped it. They give it in Canada to really young babies and we were told that it was very safe. More recently I’ve heard of something called “domperidone toxicity” but I don’t know what it is or why someone would get it… just ran into someone on another forum who has a baby that got it… I assume from much higher doses, but don’t know for sure. Good luck.March 20, 2008 at 12:38 pm #49168AnonymousInactiveLaura, Sheri, and Lori,
Thanks a lot for your reply and information. Glad to learn that Canada use domperidone, that’s what Dodo is using. She started domperidone at 5 wks old, then stopped domperidone and started Losec at 9 wk old, then got a cold and messed up her badly (plus some antibiotics given for the cold, which makes her worse), then now come back to both and is getting better but still not gaining weight. I was concerned about the side effects of domperidone (it looks like it can make baby uncomfortable). After reading your experiences with domperidone, I may suggest my cousin stop using it and just stay with Losec but either change dosage or increase dosage and split to 2 or 3 times a day. Now hope I can find CaraCream for them… I will let you all know if I heard reply back from MARCI-kids. This is very helpful! Thanks a lot!

When you gave Losec along with apple juice, how old was your child? I think apple juice is easier than applesauce for my cousin. Is apple juice ok for 3 month old? I have a 2.5 yo, but I didn’t give my daughter anything other than breastmilk/formula and water when she was that young so I don’t know. Thanks!
March 20, 2008 at 2:23 pm #49172AnonymousInactiveI think apple juice would be OK for a 3 month old. We gave our son diluted apple juice in a bottle once a day at about that age, as it helped with his chronic constipation.
When using it to administer Losec, I would recommend only a little bit (like 5-10 mL) in a syringe – just enough to give the Losec with. The reason being that you want the med to be given on an otherwise empty stomach followed up with a full feeding 30-60 minutes later (unless you are using the Caracream, then it would not matter).March 20, 2008 at 6:51 pm #49189AnonymousInactiveThanks!
March 23, 2008 at 12:25 am #49265AnonymousInactiveHi, do you guys have this experience? Baby Dodo will for sure spit up the first feeding of everyday. Her routin is: in the morning given Losec at emply stomach, also with the Miltolium, after 30 minutes feed her, and she will spit up as soon as her lips touched the bottle or the breast (she’s on both breastmilk and bottle) without have a sip. Is this strange? Shall the Motilium given at least 3 hrs after Losec (capsule)?
Another questions, about (average) how many times your child spit up after taking Losec/Prilosec for about 14 days? Thanks!

March 23, 2008 at 9:58 am #49267hellbenntKeymasterthe PPIs (prevacid, prilosec, nexium, protonix) do not stop the spitting, they just stop the pain, so you can have a baby who is not in pain & spits up & gains weight & then it’s called a ‘happy spitter’ and a ‘laundry problem’
it’s the pain that lessens/goes away, not always the spit up. sometimes people report that the spitting lessens w/ a PPI, but not usually…March 25, 2008 at 12:16 am #49310AnonymousInactiveThank you Laura.
