hello moms. need some help again. the prevacid tabs were working great for spitup but they were making julian so gassy he has been waking up every two hrs. So at his ped appt I asked about compounding the prevacid w/out the lactose and aspartame. The ped said to have the pharmacy call up to get the rx. Then I spoke w/ the pharmacist and explained exactly what we wanted. I went to fill it today and they swtched it to compounded prilosec! arrrggghhh – apparently the pharmacist and ped have decided that prevacid compound isnt good.
soooooo – do I switch to the prilosec and hope that it works? Do I stay on the tabs and deal with the gas? Do I start looking for a new pediatrician???The first appt the GI specialist has is September!June 14, 2008 at 3:16 pm #52585AnonymousInactiveOh I should add that the gas makes him scream in pain. This is killing me.

a. call and let the scheduler know that you will take ANY cancelled appointments. People are always cancelling and docs HATE to have empty time slots. They will be appreciative of this.b. call back maybe like once a week to remind the office that you are still willing to take any appointments. They may get annoyed with you. But, then again, if they are annoyed they may squeeze you in ASAP so you will quit buggin them. Either way, your little one gets seen faster.Good luck and kep us posted!June 15, 2008 at 7:12 am #52601AnonymousInactiveHi! I am sorry you are having a rough time with the solutabs.
I’m not very experiences with compounds either, but it sounds like you gave them the marci-kids instructions. I wonder if the pharmacist was not comfortable with mixing how you asked so they just changed it to prilosec (not realizing that no matter what med it is, it STILL needs to be compounded the way marci-kids describes) ugh!Zegerid is always an option, or even asking for prevacid capsules. They won’t be flavored, but you can always mix it with a tiny bit of water or even a tiny bit of apple juice to squirt it down and then later, when the baby can take it from applesauce, you can open the capsules over applesauce.I also agree with Kristin about bugging the GI doctor. We got in early by bugging them to death and I got a cancellation. Good luck!June 15, 2008 at 1:51 pm #52617hellbenntKeymasterask for a print-out of how the prilosec is compounded- ALL the ingredients, the % of bicarb, etc- all the things you want to look at
also: prilosec dose will need to be even HIGHER than the prevacid dose…try FAXING the doctor. provide pharmacist’s contact info (name, fax number). TELL DOCTOR to PLeASE fax pharmacist, asking for compound to be made this way: _______________June 17, 2008 at 9:17 am #52685AnonymousInactiveI agree with Laura… ask for a printout of all the ingredients in the compound and the amounts. Also, the compounded prilosec, when made correctly, with no flavourings added etc, tastes so vile that I needed a chaser to get rid of the taste. Like salty poison, imo. Hailey was on it for many months and until I tasted it myself, I couldn’t figure out why she screamed murder every time I tried to give it to her. Compounded prevacid doesn’t taste as bad but is harder to make a stable suspension. I would call marci-kids, tell them that you want to try caracream, then get the prevacid capsules and do it yourself at home. At least then it’s made right. We could never get the pharmacy to do it correctly despite my instructions. They said they were, but the printout said otherwise.
