joel help!! my three month old daughter 11.5 pounds, just began prilosec at 5 mg. once a day. this from a reluctant pedi., who does not really buy that i firmly believe my daughter has sandifer’s. at long last i saw the symptoms listed and could not believe it. i have a pedi. gi. specialist appointment in two weeks. so far, at day four the prilosec is barely getting at the reflux symptoms and not at all at the sandifer’s (head turning etc.) i noted that some kids are on zantac and ppi. how do you determine if this is necessary or helpful? -elaine
also: have you heard of cranial sacral tx or chiropractic tx being helpful?

A PPI like Prilosec is much more effective at treating reflux than an H2 blocker like Zantac, but at the dose that you are giving it, it will barely have any effect. Infants metabolize and eliminate PPIs at a rate 3 times faster than adults, and as a result they need to be given higher doses with higher frequency.
Dr Jeffrey Phillips, who I work with here at the University of Missouri, would recommend that you get a prescription for Zegerid Powder for Oral suspension. It is a flavored, immediate-release form of omeprazole (the same drug as in Prilosec) that is easy to mix up and administer at home. He would recommend that your daughter receive one 20 mg packet of Zegerid per day, split into three doses. You should mix each packet at a 2mg/mL concentration by adding 6.5 mL of water to the powder in a large syringe with a tip cap. The drug should be stored in this syringe in the refrigerator. You can squirt each individual dose into a small (5 cc) oral dosing syringe, or mix each dose into a small amount of your son’s milk or formula (as long as you make sure that he drinks the full amount). Dr Phillips does not recommend that reflux be treated by means of such treatments as craniosacral therapy or chiropracty as these methods have not been proven to work in any studies. if you read my welome/intro (which I’m guessing you have), then you’ll find that only with a ‘proper’ dose of PPI, Jonah’s Sandifer symptoms went away…I did use the 2 drugs with Jonah, and this was prescribed by our ped GI. However, once we got the PPI dose ‘right’ then jonah no longer needed the zantac…this did take a while, though, to get the PPI dose ‘right’ so I we were thankful to have the zantac as a necessary ‘support.’ We were told to make sure the zantac was given 2 hrs seperate from the PPI, while others here on this board have been told by their ped GIs to wait more like 4 or 5 hrs. we were always fine with just the 2 hours…
I would get to a ped GI asap…5mg is sooooo small….
as for the cranial sacral & chiropractic, there’s been a lot written about this (yes, I brought, still do occasionally, jonah to a chiropractor. did it help? who knows? did it hurt? nah, he liked it. Personally I would NOT forgo Western medicine- I believe these things are fine as a ‘supplement.’):
to do a search: there’s the ‘search’ button located in the upper right hand corner of the screen
you put the key word/s you’re searching for
then you choose “Topic Subject” from the drop- down menu of “Search In”
then I like to choose “All Forums” from the drop- down menu of “Search Forum”
then I like to choose “Topic Start Date” from the drop- down menu of “Sort Results By” (this way I get all the posts from the past that might help me)
