Hello,
First let me say I am so excited to find this forum!!!!! Lots of good information. I’m just at my wits end trying to get some relief for my daughter (just turned 4 months old). I also have a 4 year old son. We tried Zantac, with a bit of relief. But because the Zantac dosage was dependent on weight it only semi-worked when she was in the window for that dosage. When I mean semi-worked, my daughter never napped and only slept when she was basically so exhausted from crying all day because of the pain. So, we are now trying Prevacid Solutabs with a dosage of half of a solutab once a day with no luck
We had two blissful days when she actually took a nap and wasn’t contiuously screaming in pain. This is when she was on both the Zantac and Prevacid because our DR told us to over lap for three days when starting the Prevacid.
My question is can you give an infant both Zantac and Prevacid? How do you space the medicines out? We were giving her Zantac in the morning and at night.
Also, when is the best time to give an infant the Solutab? Morning or night? And then do you feed them 20minutes after, 30minutes after? It doesn’t seem like the Prevacid is working, today she screamed and threw up all day long. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
She is exculsively nursing and has had recoccuring Thrush. So between the thrush and the reflux it has been miserable for her. I’ve checked through the forum archives but any advice would be so greatly appreciated. It is just gut wrenching to see her in this much pain for so many hours everyday.
Thank you so much, I’m so thrilled to have found this forum.

I can help! you can certanily do Zantac and Prevacid. You need to try and space them 4 hrs apart though. I don’t know how much your LO weighs, but I would already be calling to try and get at least another 1/2 solutab per day for her. It is best to dose Prevacid at least 2-3x per day and do an H2 blocker like zantac or pepcid in the afternoon or during the night for breakthrough acid. For my son, we had him on a prevacid AM, zantac noon, prevacid PM, pepcid bedtime and that is what worked for him. With prevacid (if you are using capsules or solutabs) you have to give it on an empty stomach and then wait 30 mins to feed. I know you said you are BFing and that can be tough!! Some BFng moms found it easier to use Buffer Babies which turns capsules into a STABLE compound or use Zegerid. **maybe someone will come along and post info for you on buffer babies**
and oooh thrush! And can’t tell you how bad thrush can flare reflux! We weren’t BFing…but my son got a nasty case of thrush once, in fact, I’ve saved the post, it is from 2007!! The best way to get rid of it is to call and beg for a round of liquid Diflucan for him and an Rx of Diflucan for you. You need to both be treated at the same time! Try reading my link and scroll down to user ‘kevieb’ post:Good luck…and if you have any more questions..just ask!February 8, 2009 at 8:21 pm #60893AnonymousInactiveI agree w/ Jill… we still do Prevacid & Axid (like Zantac) many days.
We do: Prevacid when he wakes up in the morning (but I make sure he hasn’t nursed for 2-2.5 hrs, then wait 30min before nursing), then Axid @ Noon, then Prevacid @ 4, then Axid (or Pepcid) before bed OR middle of the night.
Thrush does stink… we had it early on for a while. I applied Monistat directly to my nipples 4-6x/day (just be sure to wipe off before feeding baby). I was on a probiotc & ds was as well. Eventually the thrush went away & we never went to a rx med but were very close to having to.
Since you’re nursing… how are the diapers/stools? Stinky gas?
Hang in there!
February 9, 2009 at 1:12 pm #60904AnonymousInactiveHi,
Thank you both for your quick response to my question. I have a call into the doctor’s office to try to put my daughter on both medicines at the same time. Feels like I’m in his office every other week. The Prevacid is not working, spent a very sleepless weekend.I did not understand the importance of the stool question until yesterday. It seems like on the prevacid she has much more frequent BM, that are totally different then before she was on the medicine and a lot of gas…is this common with Prevacid? is it a “side effect?” The gas seems to be bothering her as much as the reflux.
Thank again for the information,

It may be something you have to address & tackle separately. BUT, if you can clearly see the stools changed when the Prevacid started it may be a reaction to the solutabs (either the lactose or aspartame).
February 9, 2009 at 7:50 pm #60909hellbenntKeymasterplease make sure baby is on ‘proper dose’ (high enough!)
because this is very important!
so, if you feel prevacid isn’t working, check the marci-kids dosing…perhaps the current dose isn’t high enough to prove effectiveand how long has baby been on prevacid? it can take a good 14 days to see it’s full effects… -
