Hi all,
This is my first post and I need help! My 5 1/2 month old was diagnosed with reflux at 3 months and given Zantac for the last 2 months. When it no longer seemed to be working, the ped. switched her to Prevacid. She’s been on that for more than a week now. Here’s the deal: she is gaining weight rapidly and has been since birth. She is breastfed and has been feeding every 2 hours pretty much since birth. For the past 3 days we have been struggling with her for every nap and bedtime. She will lay down, close her eyes, and then several minutes later, start fidgeting and eventually crying until we pick her up. She arches her back as well.By the end of the day, she is so exhausted she falls asleep nursing but she will not fall asleep lying down. I know she is uncomfortable but I don’t know why. I know the Prevacid takes a little while to work but should her symptoms get worse? The ped. says she will grow out of it and referred us to someone who helps parents find ways to calm fussy babies. He said a GI visit is not necessary b/c she is gaining weight. But in my heart I know there is something wrong. Any ideas on this situation?

sounds like your little one is comfort feeding…the prevacid might not be a proper dose, or a proper form, or even being administered properly… http://www.marci-kids.com is THE place to find the proper dose, as they are at the FOREFRONT of research of PPIs w/ infants. also, it can take up to 14 days to see the results of prevacid so, if you’re not giving any other medicine, it’s as if baby isn’t on any meds at ALL. I would look up PROPER zantac dose (10mgs per kilo) and give that, too, spaced 4hrs from the prevacid, and see if that does anything for her. (Zantac dosing- my/other’s question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914)it also might be something in your diet. might not be (confused yet?), but if stools are frequently green (occasional green is normal) and/or if they’re mucousy (looks like snot or banana strings), and if baby has a hard time/straining/grunting to pass a stool or if there’s frequent foul-smelling gas- these are all indicators that it MIGHT be something in your diet…I have a LOT MORE to say & (most of) it’s here:
